The only team that could beat them was themselves!

UC Riverside fires its coach. The SoCal Big West teams (Riverside, Irvine, Fullerton, Long Beach, Northridge), cannot seem to surpass mediocrity. Most have reached the NCAA tourney at least once, but they sink right back to .500 or worse.

They all play some preseason payday games, but this is still pretty ugly heading into conference play

    UC Santa Barbara 11-3
    Hawai'i 9-4
    UC Davis 9-5
    CS Fullerton 7-5
    Long Beach State 6-10
    UC Riverside 5-9
    Cal Poly 5-9
    UC Irvine 5-11
    CSU Northridge 3-11 .214

League hasn't been the same since UNLV left.

Did some drinking with Cutts when he was a Northern Arizona assistant years ago. Great guy. Unfortunate it ended this way.

They don't provide Vaseline for visiting teams in Starkville. The free throw disparity last night was sublime.

They don't call it StarkVegas for nothing.

UVa skullfucked Tech last night. That might be even too kind of a word. As much as I like Buzz Williams, his scheduling philosophy is garbage. Duke can get away with playing a crap schedule in the non-conference because it's Duke, and at least it plays a couple of high-profile neutral site games. Tech will get no scheduling benefit of the doubt, nor should it, when it loads up with home games against Detroit, El Cid, Houston Baptist, Morehead State, Radford, UMES, Presbyterian and N.C. A&T. Nice that they played at Kentucky. That schedule did nothing to prepare it for ACC play. Hokies will be lucky to sniff the NIT this year.

Buzz tried to skip out on the media last night, too. Did a super-quick presser while most of them were talking to UVA players. One of the larger reporters had to physically stand in the hallway to block his way and ask him questions.

I think Tech is going to match up with several other ACC teams much better than UVa, but even so Buzz isn't going to meet the lofty preseason expectations.

My Wahoo wife, still extremely bitter about last year's game in Blacksburg, screamed "God dammit" while I was in the kitchen late in the game. I rushed in to see what was wrong and she said the walk ons were going to let Tech get to 50 points. I think most UVa fans wanted Tony to run it up.

Accurate on all counts. I also wonder if Tony didn’t want to rub things in too much with the teams playing again this year.

    Ted being Ted.
Not talkin': Ref turns back on UNC's Berry
If the NCAA would allow officials to have their names on the back of their shirts, Ted would be the first to get in line to do it.
Cause everybody needs to know who Ted is.

By the way, for those of you wondering if ACC refs are still encouraging the VT “Drive wildly, lunge at a defender and draw fouls” offense, the answer is “Yes, and now it applies to rebounds, too.”

Any league in which Karl Hess and Ted Valentine still operate is not a good league.
