    What's an earned run?

Which one do you think GMs care more about?

Meh, I'm not drawn to that part of it. But it is the height of ignorance to say that an ERA is some stone-eyed summary of completely objective facts.

I'm willing to entertain his argument that ERA is more indicative than FIP of how a pitcher is performing, and in particular how a pitcher will perform going forward.

But this is essentially the conversation right now:

Q: "Why are the results more important than the projected results when assessing a pitcher?"

A: "Because the results are more important than the projected results."

1, Zimmermann is hitting .365. What?

2, Zimmermann is hitting .524 when the ball is in the upper outside corner of the strike zone. Gsellman throws one to the upper outside corner. Zimmermann rips it to right for a hit. #SmartPitching

    Such a funny game sometimes.

A Nat hits a bloop to shallow center. Lagares sprints 30 yards and dives head-first and JUST misses the ball. He seemingly tweaks his glove thumb but the game goes on. Next Nat -- Wieters, I think -- beats one out to avoid a double play. Game stops so TC and the trainer can go out to center to check on Lagares. Seems fine and the game goes on.

Michael Taylor smacks Gsellman's next pitch to deep center. Lagares sprints 50 yards to the fence but it goes over, barely.

    Poor Gsellman.

Seems like something *is* up with Lagares though: TC pinch-hits for him in the bottom half.

It is a far better measure of what has actually happened than FIP, which is a projection of what might have happened under different conditions.

You are choosing what might have been over what actually did happen. Under a different set of circumstances, your aunt could have been your uncle, but that doesn't give the lady balls.

Lagares has a fracture of the IP joint in his thumb.

You mean the FIP joint, right?
