That's not the only reason his nickname was "ROCK".

If I was the A's I would have only taken one of the injured guys and asked for someone else because that has a chance to work out really, really bad for Oakland.

Kaprelian, Mateo and Fowler. Big risk/reward for the A's, and having Gray under control for two more years makes it a pretty obvious move for the Yankees.

They feel pretty good about the outfield (although with Gardner's contract expiring after next season, and a deep desire to somehow dump Ellsbury, the Yankees' OF isn't looking that settled beyond 2018). I think Gregorius' play (and the looming presence of Torres) has convinced them that Mateo was expendable. Kaprelian, if he recovers from surgery well enough, could be a real prize for Oakland, but that's a big if, and Gray is a proven capable starter.

Sounds like the A's got three top Yankee prospects that they'll most likely deal for more prospects when the make the majors. That's just how the A's roll.

Mateo is now an outfielder as well, although the A's could put him back at short or second.

The problem is that Fowler and Kaprelian may not turn into major leaguers due to their injuries. It's a boom or bust deal for the A's, unless Mateo turns into a star

Don't forget Aaron Hicks. They have five outfielders for four spots. Gardner leaves and then you have four and then comes the opportunity to get Harper and at that point you get rid of as much of the 47 million left on Ellsbury's deal, if he is not gone by then already
