True, but is the question was the prospect(s) turn out better as much better players than the established one for their careers or just for the team making the trade?

Addison Russell has already equaled the WAR of Hammel and Samardzija since the July 2014 trade.

Alexander went 9-0 for the Tigers as they won the AL East by one game.

They entered the playoffs as heavy favorites over the Twins, and I believe pretty solid picks in Vegas to win it all, before essentially gagging in one game and letting the ALCS slide out the window.

Nobody knew at the time that John Smoltz was going to become a HOFer, but if he had stayed with the Tigers the next 18 years, he would have had his HOF career for a team finishing 15-20 games out of first every season.

So the Tigers would still take that trade every time.

Is it too late to retroactively trade Joakim Soria to somebody for a bucket?
To hell with the bucket of balls.......just get rid of him for a bucket.

I don't think so ... I'm not totally hip to the ins/outs, but as I understand it the best they were gonna get (assuming Darvish was gone anyway) was an extra lower-round pick (maybe 5th/7th round?). I don't know how these guys stack up next to your prototypical 5th- (or 7th-) round pick, but three spins of the wheel seem preferable to one.

Here's the thing about the Bagwell trade. Lou Gorman was in a terrible spot. Manager Joe Morgan had told a reporter (me) that the Sox should make the playoffs, but wouldn't if he didn't get some bullpen help. In a situation like that, you can either fire the manager (Morgan was very popular with fans) or make the damn trade. I don't know if he had to give up Bagwell to make a deal, but the rest of baseball knew the Sox were desperate and priced their relievers accordingly

Following up on mine from earlier ... best I can tell, the Rangers would have gotten an extra 3rd-round pick ...

The Indians got Michael Brantley (and some garbage) from the Brewers for Sabathia in 2008. Weirdly enough, Brantley was the PTBNL and went after the season on a deal completed in July.
