Villanova greases poles ahead of title game

Could be a painful loss for Michigan.

If Nova wins tonight....the Sixers are safely in the playoffs, the Flyers (you never know what happens in the Stanley Cup playoffs) - at least we don't have to worry about the Phillies prompting a greasing of the poles.

Seems like most eventual champs survive a scare in the second or third round.

I dunno. With the way Gabe Kapler is managing the team, they might do it to try and keep the populace from stringing him up.

Michigan State won five games by double digits during the Magic season of 1979. Only 40 teams back then.
Word is Digger Phelps hated the Spartans after that because they beat his best team and Spartans fans partying at his hotel kept him up all night.

Not sure what the spreads were, but 2009 North Carolina won all six of its games by double digits. Closest game was 12 in the regional final against Oklahoma.
A few others of recent vintage (2006 Florida, 1996 Kentucky, 1990 UNLV) had one game decided by nine but also had one close one mixed in. That 1990 UNLV juggernaut somehow only beat Ball State (?!) by two in the Sweet 16, yet otherwise didn't have a game closer than nine and won three of its six games by 30 points. The closest anyone got to 1996 Kentucky was UMass, which still lost by seven in the Final Four.
ETA: 2007 Florida also came close. It only won two of its six games by 10 or more, but none were closer than seven points.

I heard Gottlieb say today how he doesn't like Final Fours in domes. They've only been in stadiums for the last 20 years.

What is the "gate" for a Final Four for the NCAA. Figure face value tickets x 70 k has to be around $10-15 million right?

That Ball State team was mostly recruited by Rick Majerus before he went to Utah. The Cardinals had two big guys from Detroit, Paris McCurdy and Curtis Kidd, who were great college players.

Covered that UMass game. Was the kind of game where a 6-9 point lead always felt like 14 to 17 point lead.

I really hate that raised floor. As a player I think that might be more of a distraction than getting used to the lack of a backdrop for the backboards.

Brunson is the guy you face in a pickup game, and you never think he's that good. But he hits some twisting layups that he pulls out of his ass, knocks down a few jumpers and steals the ball from you. The whole time you think you should be beating him and his team, but when you look up, he's got, like, seven baskets and his team beats yours 16-9. You wound up with three baskets and turned the ball over four times, and you're never really sure how you got your ass beat.

That Ball State-UNLV game was a hell of a game.

I’m pretty sure Hunsacker was coaching at Manchester College when I was in school. I think he replaced Alford. It was a huge deal in the conference that he previously coached at Ball State.
