Did not realize that until I read the paper this morning. And as I mentioned, don't lose to Washington State.

It's like losing to DePaul ... you can never make the tourney with a loss like that! ;)

Some dumb columnist out here theorized that it's because AP voters watch games and have fully formed opinions of St. Mary's, but committee members don't watch games and are unaware.

    Now that's pretty fucking funny.

Even more than college football, the AP basketball polls are Tuesday sports-page filler. Nothing more.

Gonzaga was being ranked No. 6 and 7 by AP in recent weeks. Even here in Zag-land, no one believes they're one of the top 10 teams in the country.

You realize there were no at large births in 1974, right? Nobody got one.

That is wholly different from this situation.

I don't get USC out at all.

How does a major conference only get 3 teams in and they finished 1, 3 and 8!! in the standings

USC, Oklahoma State and University-6 were all on the bubble and excluded. What do they have in common? The three letters are not RPI as much as they are FBI.

    Sit down, St. Mary's.

This explains it pretty well -- that eighth-place team beat TWO No. 1 seeds this year (Kansas and Xavier). Also one of the criteria is wins against tournament teams and ASU has five (Kansas, Xavier, K-State, UCLA, Fullerton) while USC has two (New Mexico State and Fullerton).

NCAA tournament: Pac-12 gets three bids as UCLA, ASU sneak in (USC gets shunned)

If Gonzaga and BYU leave the WCC in basketball, it will kick them out in all other sports too. Good luck trying to find another conference.

Wouldn't the Mountain West take all the other sports too?

Then Lunardi got them all right and the committee missed.

The committee always says they don't factor in conference standings, but some years that is clearly bullshit. Looks like it stuck to it this year.
