Yep, you know those early holiday tournaments in places like the Bahamas that seem almost like glorified exhibitions? Well, appears they were very important after all.

Seems what happened in November was given more weight this year. Hence ASU being chosen over five teams that finished ahead of them in their own conference--this has to be first time that's ever happened, right?

Of course it's about selling tickets, and that's tough to argue. I'll be in Detroit on Friday and having Purdue, Butler and Sparty there will make for a great atmosphere. Of course it's not a perfect system because the country doesn't have an equal amount of teams in each region, but I'm not going to listen to any boo-hooing about Kentucky and Ohio State going to Boise.

And Coach Cal saying a lot of his players couldn't name the state that Boise is in was a great unintentional comedy moment. I bet if you asked UK players to name states west of the Rockies, you'd get some fun answers.

Teams' record in their last 10 games was explicitly eliminated from the list of criteria in the new selection process.

I think the old Big East proved the difficulty of having some teams in your conference with FBS football, and some without it.

And I think there are plenty of old-line MWC administrators who would be more than happy to tell BYU to GFY after the way BYU pulled out of the conference before.

Kansas and West Virginia got all their Division I schools in. Did any other states?

I really get tired of coaches of big time schools (and the Billy Packers of the world) complaining about seeds.

Florida got its 3 power conference teams in.
Texas got its 3 flagship publics in.

I'm surprised that two HBCU schools are playing each other in a play-in game. I thought the committee really strained to avoid that.

They usually do, but I don't think they had a choice this year, from a competitive standpoint. Texas Southern's RPI is around 220. NC Central is 270. That's a full 100 spots worse than the rest of the field. Would have been severely unfair to move one of them out of Dayton to avoid the optics of the two HBCU champs playing.
