Also, the pride people take in their brackets - or joyous self-deprecation when things go haywire - cracks me up. It's essentially a slot machine. At my old law office, people were convinced every year I was going to be some bracket Titan because I used to be a sports writer. And these are really smart people.

You're right, I underestimated things. The committee needs high quality gel filled knee pads and oral lube.

There are so many things you can't predict such as Nevada being down 22 with 11 minutes to play then ending the game on a 32-8 run.

    Or UMBC winning.

Or Virginia and Arizona and Carolina getting smoked.

As much as you want to take lower seeds, you've conditioned yourself to take the usual powers.

It's tough to pull the trigger on so many many double-digit seeds and yet here we are year after year.

I run a bracket through yahoo every year. Looking at the scenario generator, there are still tons of people alive, despite some awful selections.

    This is great.

It's just hard to pick the right double-digit seeds. You know it's going to happen, somewhere. But Joe Cubicle doesn't know more than the Committee.

Like most everyone else's, the left side of my bracket is completely trashed. I have six of eight left in the sixteen, and all rounds from there are still alive.

    For now, lol.

I know this is just me and I don't reflect most sports fans, but usually by the time the sweet 16/elite 8 rolls around, and it's Michigan State, Duke, Kansas and Carolina, I am done, out of there. I couldn't find anything interesting about those teams if I tried. I like the look of this Sweet 16.

Especially when, in the end, it's usually the same teams still standing. For all of the chaos in the South Region, Kentucky is still there and a heavy favorite at this point. The Midwest is nothing but traditional powers outside of Clemson. There's some "new money" in the other brackets, but for the most part everything still went chalk. Loyola and Syracuse are the only double-digit seeds left alive, and Syracuse making a run hardly qualifies as a major surprise. Ten of the Sweet 16 are 5-seeds or better.
It goes back to that perfect storm analogy that was mentioned earlier. Everything has to come together just right to pull off a big upset, and that rarely happens twice in three days.

    Here's one of my brackets.

I might still finish in the money.

First time both my teams in the title game lost in the first weekend. (Arizona v. Sparty)

    Why is Xavier still there?
