You're probably right, 'cause without a doubt someone would want to go without a helmet.

They watch live, then they watch on video and the athletes wear ankle monitors that record their velocity, height gained, (and g-force? revolutions?) and that gets factored in after the run. That's why the athletes have to stand there mugging for the camera for a few minutes before they get their scores.

    Thank you!

Armed with this information, I'm going to be the hit at our next half pipe viewing party.

Bedridden for 4 days with a fucked up back and watching the Olympic NBC channel for events and the Olympic News Channel. It’s been fun, less Americentric coverage and less Todayshow style ‘features’

I was in Colorado for the first few days of the Olympics, in the Vail area where a lot of the athletes are from. Everyone is into the Winter Olympics, including the guys I was with. We would get off the mountain every afternoon and just binge Olympics and beer until bed time.

I'm back in Chicago now, and turned on the radio this morning to hear four meatheads boasting about how much they don't give a shit about the Winter Olympics and don't plan to watch a minute. (Bragging about not caring about things other people seem to care about is probably America's No. 1 pastime in 2018.)

    Welcome home!

Everything is a distant second to being easily offended.

I just watched Shani Davis compete in the 1,500 meter speedskating. The other guy was a Belarussian. The announcers mentioned the other guy in the beginning, then focused the entire heat on Davis. And the Belarussian guy pulled ahead of him in the last lap and beat him pretty handily. Yet, all that was mentioned was the guy beating him at the end, and a quick announcement that the guy was in second place for now.

Literally, about 99 percent of the segment was about Davis.

Two summers ago, I went on vacation in Canada in part so I could watch some of the Olympics on the CBC.

Hallelujah! Yeah, it was a bit Canada-centric. But the commentators seemed so much more knowledgeable about the full fields, and in some cases, the sport in general. (Hi, Elliotte Friedman!) I'm not sure if part of that is because the Canadians were not winning nearly as often as U-S-A. But it was definitely more enjoyable for a wider view.
