A friend of mine always went to Walker and Curtis Cups for the atmosphere, quality of play and especially the courses. The last 4 American sites for the Walker are LACC, Chicago, NGLA and Merion. Much more interesting venues than 95 per cent of Tour courses.

I was scheduled to be at Bandon last week for a buddy trip with 20 buds and I just couldn’t do it during COVID. Dammit.

The really old outstanding US courses were never designed with mass market sports in mind. They couldn't have spectators in any amount even if they wanted to, which they don't. I will be very interested in how the Open does at LACC. My favorite story about that place was that, not wishing to be seen as anti-Semitic, although they of course were, the members back in the '20s just passed a rule that NOBODY in the movie business could be a member.

... which make it a true shame that Pine Valley in New Jersey doesn't get the chance.

Open in L.A. is way, way, way overdue. It will be a traffic disaster -- shocking, I know. And glad it's not Riviera. Not that I don't love Riviera, but I see it every year in February. A new, old-school course in the rotation will be good.

One of the very first (black and white only) Wonderful World of Golfs was shot at Pine Valley, because it was film. There's no room there for a 21st century TV setup, let alone spectators. It's the best course in the world, but if you're not scratch, it's no fun. One of my brothers is an 8 at a damn tough course in Delaware, and his opinion of PV is the same as hacker me, who played it once. Damn course just beats you up so much it's like a goddamn marathon.

No women members still. I believe David Fay resigned his PV membership when he became head of the USGA.

I made the gruesome mistake of walking 36 holes at Castle Pines years ago.
Me and Craig Stadler share the same opinion......"I'll never walk this fucking place again."

That's a hard climb -- especially if you aren't used to altitude .... or if you're Stadler.

Played a course with family overseas basically built into the side of a mountain. Had one par-4 that was par-3 length because it was so severely uphill - complete with a mechanized pull rope to get you from tee to greens and plateaus to land your ball. The other was a slightly more standard par-4 that wasn't quite as severe but still had a pull rope to help poor souls up the hill.

What's left of my knees ache just posting this.

I love playing mountain golf (in a cart) and watching it on tv.
Bandon Dunes looks incredible, but it's really hard to watch on tv with all the reflections off the water.

If I’m Nick Faldo, would I ever do commentary from anyplace but my den again, unless I felt like going to Augusta?
