Mickelson lost his lead on the very first hole with probably the worst approach putt of his career. Koepka made birdie. He's not the sort to give back many leads himself.

Koepka immediately gives it back on the second. It's like he was reading the board instead of his greens book.

At this moment, European Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington is low European at the PGA Championship.

Uncle Verne with the call as Phil holes out of the sand for birdie on 5: "Oh my gracious!"

Well ... Verne has already used "YESSIR!" That was during the last (Golden) Bear hunt.

A bit o' local color/history for you non-South Carolinians (i.e., pretty much all of you) watching the proceedings. That crescent in the upper left corner of the S.C. flag is not a crescent moon. Rather, it recalls a gorget, an old-school designator of military rank.

Mickelson is even through seven -- with one par.

The important component is that the stars and bars that used to fly in Columbia finally came down.

(And not all of us are ignorant of all things South Carolina.)

    In other words, typical Phil.
