Ducks tied the Sharks, 4-4, late in the third period last night, then won in OT. On the tying goal by McTavish, Henrique was obviously offside, by at least two feet. Sharks challenged. There was a very lengthy video review. No replays in the arena. Looked up the radio booth. Ducks announcer Steve Carroll, who did have the benefit of replays, was giving the washout sign. But it was ruled a good goal. Carroll just shrugged his shoulders. I haven't seen any explanation as to how that ruling came about. On the postgame, Ducks announcers admitted to getting a lucky break on that call.

Turned on the Buffalo-Minnesota game and the Sabres were losing 2-1. They're now ahead 4-2. It's been so long since they were relevant, they have been on fire of late.

I have occasionally mused that for some games, Mickey should call the game from a cabin in the woods with a roaring fire and a Scotch in hand. This time they actually did it. Watch the end for a surprise that was clearly not approved beforehand by the folks at ScotiaBank Arena.

You mean the trophies voted on by hockey writers?

Shocked my Facebook feed isn’t full of Sharks fans complaining. They enjoy that as much as watching the team. And with SJ not relevant this year, is all they have.

Is now a good time to thank the Sharks for Brent Burns?

I miss Burns. He was quite a character. But if he’s doing well (honestly haven’t had the energy to follow) that’s great.

It's not that he's run up huge numbers - at least not yet. But he's Dougie Hamilton with much more aptitude and willingness to actually defend.

Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson set to make their season debuts for Washington today. The Caps managed to tread water and stay in the playoff hunt while they were out. Welcome reinforcements.

I'm not a huge Dougie Hamilton fan, but he is having a really good year. He looks much better right now than he ever did with Carolina.

At this point, at their respective ages especially, I'd probably take Hamilton over Brent Burns (I can't quite believe I am saying that!). I say that as someone who has always loved Burns and thinks he has been really good for hockey, and I know he is having a really good season. I've just watched a bunch of Devils games, and Hamilton has been much better than the Dougie Hamilton I remember from past seasons.

Wonder if Lindy got through to him in ways Rod never could?

Hamilton obviously has the offensive skill set, but between too many of his attempts at defense and his coming up small at times where a player of his caliber should be present and accounted for, it worked out for the best. Especially when the Sharks were in such a cap mess and trying to do some things to move forward that it became pretty easy to poach him.
