The way you have to do it is: Buyouts + throw a lot of young players in and see if any of them are better than you hoped + hang onto draft picks. It takes time.

Buyouts just push the problem down the road. The dead cap space is a killer

That’s one of the reasons Yzerman traded Hronek
He has one year left at $5.5M
Not worth resigning but worth a first- and second-round pick because he’s a RHD

Buyouts are bad idea if you are trying to do the rebuild without really rebuilding the way too many teams do it. You just prolong your problems.

Buyouts are fine, and kind of necessary, if you are a team that went for it and fell short. You need to take the attitude that you are really rebuilding and you know you are going to suck for a few years. You use that time to play young, inexperienced and inexpensive players to see if any of them will develop into reliable players for the post-rebuild. You lose a lot of games, but that is why it is a rebuild. You use the draft to try to rebuild. And as cap space clears, you start signing free agents who strategically who fit what you're trying to do.

Buyouts rarely work with the worst contracts. They make a three year problem into a six year problem.

Yzerman bought out Justin Abdelkader and Frans Nielsen
Neither were NHL players anymore but they were on the roster because Ken Holland had given both big contracts
Now their cap space is fine

Easter Sunday, 4/2/1972. Gerry Meehan's goal with four seconds remaining knocks the Flyers out of the playoffs. Bobby Clarke shatters his stick over the goal, Doug Favell curls up into a ball and tries to hide in the net. One of my greatest sports memories, the Aud went absolutely berserk. My seat was at about 11 o'clock, upper balcony.

I got to the Olympia a few times before they tore it down
    What a wonderful old barn
And of course, the highlight was the scoreboard

I am petitioning the NHL to do away with wild cards. The East is a dumpster fire of shit.

But think of all the Sebastian Aho-on-Sebastian Aho crime you’d miss out on … one hooked the other in the game that just concluded.
