Phil said he's on board for all eight, below. I'm sure it will feel like a vacation, playing eight weeks over about five months and going from four rounds to three -- plus do ya think Phil is getting to tournament sites well in advance to scout things out?

Exactly. It's eight weeks (actually six since there are eight fewer rounds). Throw in the four majors. Obviously a major cash grab for those who are jumping. But where do they go when this things goes USFL ala 1985?

By then, Phil will either be in an oil drum in what's left of Lake Mead or he'll have made himself whole. He's a charming sonofagun, so exhibitions, etc. will keep him around. The thing is, in terms of cold cold cash, this is a much better exit for him than transitioning to the Champions Tour, where he'd have to work four times as hard for less (still great) money.

I think the only players who could really worry are the guys in their early 20s. If the league vanishes, how long does a potential PGA Tour ban last? Phil and DJ have enough guaranteed cash to give zero f*cks, and probably a lot of other guys do too. Again, you can finish DFL for all eight events and make $1 million. And any recognizable name isn't gonna do that. It's probably more like $2 million minimum just to make your tee time.

Aside from Mickelson, the big names in this event are all past 40 or pushing it (DJ). So it's paycheck uber alles, not that there's anything wrong with that. What this league needs (and I hope they never get it) is a young phenom or two.

Yup. What if it got, say, Rory. Jordan. Rahm. Hovland. J.T. Hideki. That would change the calculus.

It has the US Amateur champion, and if Piot does well, I don’t know how the Tour can deny him if he wants to join

Talor Gooch isn't exactly a young phenom, but he's a 30-year-old rising star who's already won this season. Entirely possible the guy could rattle off two LIV wins, which would be $8 million. More than Rahm made last year in leading the Tour money list. That's what's gonna wake up so many more guys in another couple months. Right now it probably still doesn't seem real.
