The Tour got $1.5 b-b-b-billion in strategic capital and all they've done with it so far is distribute it to the top players as a handout. It's insane.

But hey, just three weeks 'til the Presidents Cup, one of the more overcooked events in all of sports, never mind golf.

The "product" is only as good as the players. In the 1980s, except for Nicklaus winning the Masters and Watson and Trevino at the end of their careers, it was a bunch of nameless, faceless polyester clones (quick, name the player who won the most Tour events in the 80s? Answer below). The late 80s and early 90s saw Norman, Price, Love and Couples as the main stars, leading up to Tiger. The Tour benefited from Hogan and Snead, then Jack and Arnold, then Tiger and now has Scheffler, X, Rory and Morikawa.
It goes in cycles and a commissioner has little to do with how many stars or how deep the Tour will be at any given time.

Answer: Calvin Peete -- which says all you need to know about the Tour in the 80s.

This product is losing plenty of fans and Scheffler's historic season hasn't turned that tide. It's remarkable how many 40-and-under golf fans will eat up everything that Good Good does while mostly ignoring the PGA Tour -- and the Tour knows it, hence the "Creator Classic." But is the Tour dynamic enough to capture that audience on a more consistent basis? Its prized TV demographic is only getting older, and even some of those fans have tuned out because of the fracture in the game.

Scheffler got $25 million for the year end PGA playoff win.
What does the LIV winner get for their year end playoff? $25 million in Truth Social stock, and the chance to kill their very own journalist?

Scheffler wins $25 million and it's just another fart in the media wind.

Rory and Scottie vs. Brooks and Bryson in prime time in December in Vegas. "The Match" as a franchise has gone stale but this matchup is irresistable. The fact that the PGA Tour signed off on it is rather amazing, but maybe the ice really is starting to thaw between the rivals.

Perhaps someone in Ponte Vedra and someone else in Saudi Arabia read a book about the NFL-AFL war and what happened when it ended. If both sides got wise and ended their years with a Ryder Cup-style match against each other, it'd sure as hell be a bigger draw than the Tour Championship.

I agree the ratings will at least be better than any fall event and possibly the Tour Championship. Timing is everything. If it's a Friday night in mid or late December, it will do just fine.

Come to think of it, what would really be amazing (and send everyone in Ponte Vedra into convulsions) is if on the first tee the guys decide to switch it up -- Rory partners with Bryson and Scottie partners with Brooks. Cats and dogs living together!

The dynamic of the Brooksie-Bryson pairing could be interesting.
