There were a couple reasons, Chuckles. Van Basten pretty much admitted he's building a squad for Euro 2008, so this is as good a chance as any to blood the young'uns in a tournament atmosphere.

Re: Davids -- 1) He only saw spot time while on loan to Spurs, so it's not like he's match-fit and ready to go, and 2) Trotting out the old standards of Davids, Seedorf, Kluivert, Stam, Bergkamp, etc. will only work for so long.

This is the point where I would make a remark about the usual Dutch in-fighting, but apparently the new generation isn't much better in this aspect. :p

Apparently Group D is the group of underachievers. Mexico ties Angola. Portugal is blowing it against Iran. Argentina and the Netherlands must be lickin' their chops at this.

Luckily for Portugal, Figo played well.

I lost all respect for Portugal in 2002 when they tried to fix their game with South Korea. Kind of amazing what happens when Portugal decides to try to win games instead of trying to fix ties.

ABC couldn't have picked four worse people to be its studio talkers. They all suck.

The next match in the group is Portugal vs. Mexico. This was the same matchup that took place as a friendly in Springfield as the opening setup for the "Homer buys a gun" episode. The match was highlighted by one of my personal favorite one-liners.
Disturbance breaks out over spilled beer during the nillest of nil-nil contests.
Groundskeeper Willie announces in a tone of furious disgust, "Ye call THIS a soccer riot?" Removes crowbar from inside shirt. "Com' on, lads, let's take 'em to school!"

I'm watching today in a different cable area than my usual one, which doesn't have the Spanish channel. This is so much better than ABC, I would venture to say, even if you don't know the language.
