Obviously this isn’t new — been going on for a while.

I remember covering the Northwestern-Iowa football game in 1994. This was one year before the Wildcats turned the corner and finally got their revenge for all the beatings Hayden Fry laid on them.

Anyway, late in that game the Wildcats’ RB, Dennis Lundy, was heading into the end zone untouched for a seemingly meaningless late TD. Except the ball somehow popped out of his grasp before he crossed the goal line.

It was the play that eventually helped uncovered a gambling scandal.

I remember the 1986 Rose Bowl when Iowa star running back Ronnie Harmon fumbled four times and dropped some passes. He fumbled once all season. The Hawkeyes were upset by UCLA. Rumors started soon after that Harmon threw the game.

The first time I thought I saw a thrown game was in the 1984-85 men's basketball season when host Detroit beat fourth-ranked Memphis State 71-66. Memphis State, which went to the Final Four that year with Keith Lee and William Bedford and coached by Dana Kirk, wouldn't contest Detroit's outside shots. Detroit was decent that year at 16-12, but Memphis State should have blown them out of Calihan Hall (great place to watch a game, by the way). When Bedford played for the Pistons, he was a total waste of space, which was not a surprise.
