I honestly don't remember, but this run has surprised me.

But even if they make the playoffs, they're not getting beyond the first round w/that pitching. It'll be just like in 2005, when they shot their load winning the division and got smoked in four games in the ALDS. So enjoy what you can.

I was telling my dad I hope the Mariners win the West, because I know the Yankees can beat them. But the Yankees have played better against the fucking Angels this year.
Whoever it is, I actually have faith in this year's pitching staff compared to the last couple of years'.

And the Sox have how many with Tampa Bay?

Pray Minnesota or Cleveland don't get hot.

    That's all you've got, really.

I guess that is where we disagree yet again. I think there pitching will be good for a short series. Wang, Clemens, Pettitte and Mussina/Hughes is not a bad front four.
If any of the young kids going into the bullpen pitch well, they will be OK.

Oh, I don't think the Yankees have a really good shot at the division, but anything is possible.
As far as Cleveland and Minnesota, I honestly am not really concerned about them. I think the wild card is the Yankees to lose.

    We will see.
Most of you were saying a month ago they wouldn't make the playoffs and now you are all having to make qualifying statements like, "if they do make the playoffs, they won't make it out of the first round."
From playing golf in October to losing in the first round is quite the leap after a month of ball.
I, needless to say, am looking forward to the next 2 months.

Just to draft off lil' Bucky's heat :D ...how can you have ANY faith in Clemens when the fucking White Sox, the worst offense in the AL (hi Pallister!), tattoo him for eight runs in less than two innings? Mussina has been junk in the playoffs lately. I'd take my chances with Pettitte and Wang and I could see Hughes having a John Lackey-esque postseason. But the Yankees would have to a.) start those guys in the first three games of a series and b.) win 'em all to win a first-round series. And you KNOW Torre's not slotting Clemens and Mussina fourth and fifth in the postseason rotation.

I thought the same way about Carpenter and the Cardinals when the playoffs began a year ago.

Buck: they a 1/2 game out of the wild card. How is that no shot in hell of making the playoffs?
Hopefully, the Angels will kick ass in the first round but I would not be surprised to see the Yankees deep into October.
If you put a mediocre pitcher out there -- and there are plenty of those --they feast.

You keep projecting, I'll keep praying you're right.

They're not making it. No qualifiers. No ifs, ands or buts. They're not making it.

That would make no sense, but hey, it's the Cubs.

I watched the 20-strikeout one-hitter. I understand the fascination with Wood. But how many times does he have to implode before reality sets in?

Wood has pitched exactly one inning in the major leagues this year and most likely he will be unable to go two days in a row, meaning he could do no more than share the closing duties.

Wood should be no better than fourth in line at this point. Rip Dempster all you like, but he still has 17 saves in 19 chances and most of his struggles have come in non-save situations. That includes two meltdowns in tie games against the Mets. He has an ERA over 30 against the Mets, 2.38 against the rest of the National League (got that one off cbs.sporstline).

You completely ignored the guy who is more likely next in line, Bobby Howry. And why would you put Wood ahead of Marmol, who has been dominant out of the pen all season?

The Cubs have a real shot to be in the playoffs and maybe do some damage once they get there. But it is going to be Carlos Zambrano, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano leading the way. The sooner Cubs fans stop expecting Wood and Prior to come in and save the day the better off they will be.
