I'd make the argument that the Astros field a pretty weak-kneed outfield as well. With the exception of Lee, they're putting Burke (60+ games), Lane (45+ games) and Scott (the only one of the trio with any real semblence of power) into the outfield on a regular basis. Until they get Pence back, they're going to continue to blow chunks out there.

  2. And the Cubs play in Houston tonight. Let the carnage begin!!

I have heard the name Jose Cruz Jr. bandied about on some BLOGS!, but take that with a rather large boulder of salt.

But they get 81 games a year covering an outfield about the size of my garage and in perfect weather conditions.

I'd rather have his father starting on my team. And I don't mean in his glory day, I mean now -- at the ripe age of 59 (60 in two days).

At what point does Erik Bedard start getting some Cy Young consideration? Even when his stuff is crap he goes out and beats Beckett and the Red Sox. He's been the best pitcher in the AL since June at least.

Bedard should get some, but likely won't because the O's aren't in contention. He didn't pitch a great game yesterday against Tampa Bay, but still got the win while giving up three early runs and struck out 11.

The AL July pitcher of the month award may have gotten some attention though.

I was more questioning the idea of Wood closing than anything. I know Dempster has had his blow-ups, but Howry and Marmol should both get chances before Wood does.

    OOP:

    John Maine 12-6, 3.27 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, .217 BAA

    Gil Meche 7-9, 3.96 ERA, 1.33 WHIP. .270 BAA

    Equating the two is stOOPid

You put up recent starts as evidence, and I brought up somebody with similar recent stats. It's called a slump. Better pitchers than these guys have them.

You point to career track record, which is every bit as lousy on Maine's end, though his history is shorter.

Is Maine better? I think so. But he has the advantage of a much better team around him, easier league to pitch in and better home park.

Ignoring those factors is equally foolish. Must be the old age setting in. (Yeah, I went there. Thought it was a fitting response to "stOOPid") hehe

Actually, OOP, my original post was replying to somebody's statement that Meche's bad starts were few and far between.

Four bad starts in seven since July 2 is not "few and far between"
