And yet, for all their lousiness, the Giants just extended Brian Sabean's contract. Wonder why.

 

Because ownership realizes that they forced Sabean into re-signing Bonds and pretending they had a chance to contend, instead of getting rid of some their dead wood vets and rebuilding the team the way Sabean wanted. Now they're going to give him a chance to do it his way, which almost certainly means Bonds won't be back.

 

Did they force him to sign Barry Zito to a ridiculous contract?

 

Forced might be too strong a word, but the Zito signing was not purely a baseball decision, no.

 

I can't rememeber where I read it, but somewhere in the past month, I saw someone mention that the Giants have played only 14 meaningless games since 1997.
