Jeez, chill out. Maybe he was just putting it there so others who clicked on this thread saw pappy's post.

Two from editorial at the London Freep. 11 others in admin, the press, and other areas of the building.

It's awful news all around. I heard from an editor in their weeklies about this a couple weeks ago, 10 per cent almost across the board, a hiring freeze, and a limitation on freelancers. It's going to be hard for people to find work, especially with them owning so many papers and the Star's Metroland chain also apparently in a hiring freeze.

It's days like these I'll take the chaos of my independent any day.

BTW, I hear two editors, two reporters, and several others in Peterborough and at least one in Belleville are among the group.

As someone who grew up a mile away from the Canadian border and love it every time I make it to Montreal or Quebec City, I really hate to hear this. Our print-industry pain extends beyond borders, and I offer best wishes to all of you Sun Media folks.

Yeah, they threw the hiring freeze, wage freeze and no Christmas bonus next year at our meeting today. I was so numb hearing about my friends that it really didn't register until tonight.

Just a quick note. I was emailing a former coworker of mine and she told me the Sarnia Observer (not quite a small paper, but not huge, circ around 18,000) let their two sports guys go, and another sports guy at Sarnia's weekly. They also let their entire photo department go (OK only one guy, but still).
I feel sorry for those left behind. She said only person left in sports is a sports copy editor who is responsible for laying out two papers every night. Imagine putting out a daily newspaper with no photo staff and hardly anyone in sports. Good times ahead.

So it's time to make miracles out of nothing at all.

    Thanks, PKP!

That Sarnia situation sounds crazy. Bring on the wire copy and photos and watch those subscriptions dwindle because people can get the same damned thing from London, or Toronto, or wherever. Then, of course, more cuts after that to cover the yet-again shrinking margins. What a business!

Was Dave Borody a casualty in Sarnia?

More in Peterborough too. I'll update when I know how many.

Fuck. Two reporters in Peterborough, unknown as to how many in the building overall but I'm told it was a lot.

One was a guy I used to work with. Awful, awful news.
