Maybe but it is still kind of crazy. Boise was a legitimate champ. SMU would have been and also lost. ASU actually put forth the biggest fight in the quarters.

I think true seeding fixes this some. Boise would have had a home game, which would have been all sorts of fun, and Oregon might have avoided Ohio State so soon.

I can't imagine the champs going O-fer too many times. It will be interesting to see how the byes do over time, especially if they do true seeding.

ND lost to NIU which lost to Ball State which lost to Central Michigan which lost to Eastern Michigan which lost to Akron which lost to Bowling Green which lost to Old Dominion which lost to Coastal Carolina which lost to Sam Houston which lost to Central Florida.

The Knights are in contention for their second mythical national title!

Fairly certain that all of the favorites won, though. I think ND ended up -1 at the end, though that game was basically a toss up on the money line.

True seeding: Clemson at ND, Arizona State at OSU, SMU at Tennessee, Boise at Indiana. Which would have put ND vs Penn State, OSU vs Texas, Tennessee (presumably) vs Georgia and IU/Boise vs Oregon.

Oregon gets a much better draw there, at least. So there’s your argument.

If you went true seeding with five conference champions getting in, it would have been:

    12. Clemson at 5. Notre Dame
    11. Arizona State at 6. Ohio State
    10. SMU at 7. Tennessee
    9. Boise State at 8. Indiana

Rose: Boise State-Indiana vs. 1. Oregon
    Sugar: SMU-Tennessee vs. 2. Georgia
Peach: Arizona State-Ohio State vs. 3. Texas
Fiesta: Clemson-Notre Dame vs. 4. Penn State

    Cotton: Boise-Indiana-Oregon vs. Clemson-Notre Dame-Penn State
    Orange: SMU-Tennessee-Georgia vs. Arizona State-Ohio State-Texas

I thought Boise State was eighth. So my bad there.

But Indiana being at home would have been fun too.

It probably doesn't give the champs much more of an edge with this, but the byes would have been interesting. And Oregon definitely has a different game.

I take back EVERY thing I said about Georgia's back-up. My goodness, how does a top program like Georgia have such weak QBs at the top of its depth chart? It boggles the mind. How are they able to recruit receivers?

What's interesting with true seeding, not that it matters, but the semifinalists this year would have all likely played each other already. And it's possible someone wouldn't have gotten that far.

I don't really like any team left, but anybody but Notre Dame is what I'm hoping for.

It's very "blue blood" but outside of Ohio State not really anyone who has done anything in the playoff era. I guess that's kind of a good thing.

I'll be rooting for the ND-Penn State winner. ND impressed me today. Seeing Kirby outcoached was fun. I think the Buckeyes will roll over Texas by 20 at least.

If you went by the CFP committee rankings and threw out conference championships, Alabama (11) replaces Clemson (16) and would have played at Ohio State (6) in the first round. ASU (12) at Notre Dame (5), SMU (10) at Tennessee (7) and Boise State (9) at Indiana (8).

As others have said, Indiana's saving grace was it didn't make the Big 18 title game while Clemson's was that it did make the ACC title game. There will be tweaking but you can't change the entire system just because bye teams didn't win. I mean, the Buffalo Bulls last played Nov. 26 and will have had almost 6 weeks off when they finally play Liberty in the Bahamas Bowl on Saturday. Liberty last played Nov. 29.
