I don't totally hate giving champions higher seeds, other sports do it such as the NFL. This year with not tons of clear standouts anyway, it probably doesn't even matter. But if you are going to do it with the first four shouldn't you do it with the fifth as well? So shouldn't Clemson in this case be the fifth seed and get to host? What logic is that that four get the benefit but the fifth doesn't?

Oh, I know, it's because they thought the last champ would be a non-power one.

If they had given ASU the Fiesta Bowl slot, that would have been a whole lotta fishy Tostitos.

Not only that, but their non-conference schedule was garbage. An FCS team, two with .500 or below records (Wisconsin and South Florida), and Conference USA's Western Kentucky. It's not Alabama's fault Wisconsin sucked this year, but that's not a slate of opponents to hang your hat on.

I mean, there's the not-minor detail that you can only do four byes in a 12-team field.

But why doesn't the fifth get some sort of benefit as well, such as getting to host the first game?

Forget the byes, look at seeds. Why is the eighth-ranked team the third seed, the 11th-ranked team the fourth seed but the 12th the 12th when all are conference champs? It is stupid.

If you are going to do it they should all get the top five seeds, like the NFL does, or just seed based on ranking.

Non-conference matters less than what land mines you can dodge in your jumbo-sized conference. Indiana is a wonderful story and I’m glad they are in the field. But let’s not pretend they didn’t got a massive break by missing Oregon, Penn State and even Illinois and Iowa. Likewise Texas had a pillow-soft SEC slate excepting Georgia and that gave them enough cushion that getting a pair of Dawg bites was easy to overcome. Even Arizona State, SMU and Clemson benefited from this.

Conference schedule makers are going to start outbidding health insurance companies for extra bodyguards.

No system is going to be perfect for this. I like the notion of rewarding the conference champs, who in most cases had to play an extra game against a good team. You just can't do it for all of them.

Bottom line - Clemson should be happy they're even included. The playoff has too many teams as it is.

As an Indiana guy I fully admit it was a dream schedule to make an improbable run. Next year the Hoosiers are at Oregon so there's the first loss already. But what ya gonna do? One of the best things I've heard in this endless ESPN selection show is that there should be one CFB scheduling czar, and everyone wants more conference games, but I don't know if the ecosystem can get rid of the pay-for-play/automatic-win games against the Mercers of the world.
