I hate to say it, and probably will get flamed for it, but I think it's wishful thinking on these networks' part.

One of the more aggrevating things about the national Gustav coverage was their constant use of the word "breach" when talking about the Industrial Canal levee. It was never breached, water was overtopping the levee. Big difference.

It's the difference between jumping up and down in a pool to make the water go over the side or cutting a big hole in the side of the pool.

I would agree with that assessment.

I do seem to recall seeing either a quote from an official or a line from a weather report, don't remember which, that used that language though.

"Breach" makes it sound more terrifying though.

Thanks, SL. I wanted to say that too... that's the only thing I can think of. They want to keep people in other parts of the country watching, the storm won't make landfall for 12 hours... so let's throw "certain death" in their ears.

Like I said, it's horrible, I hope people get and got out, but these networks suck. ass.

I've mentioned it before. This board makes me learn something new every day. So really, the correct word is "overtopped" or "overtopping?"

Nope, I think you're spot on. It was fairly apparent they wanted the levees to go down in flames here when Gustav blew ashore. Now they get to see if death and destruction happens again.

As I told friends during Gustav, go to the local newspaper and TV station Web sites. You'll get the best, most accurate information and, most importantly, you won't get people wishing for destruction. That means the Houston media this time.

I didn't see anything, but if there was, color me stupid.

FAKE EDIT: CNN just went to commercial, and they show Galveston and he's (Wolf Blitzer) like: "Ike is getting ready to hit the coast, and people have been to get out, or they're gonna die!"
Spoken like a good horror movie, I might add. ::)

It was attributed to an NHC statement this morning in multiple news stories.

If waves are crashing OVER the seawall or levee, yes, that's overtopping. IF the waves are crashing THROUGH the seawall or levee, that's breaching.

My example of the swimming pool is somewhat primitive, but serves the purpose. Overtopping is not all that rare. Breaching is when the levee system or seawall just can't contain the surge, and is much more deadly.

Any link? I couldn't find anything. Not being a dick, just didn't see it.

I mean what I'm about to say in the most complimentary way possible.

The mayor of Galveston looks like a tough old broad.
