No. The financial crisis the last week, in terms of news value to all Americans, was a much bigger story. Not trying to diminish the agony people in Texas are going through. But the financial crisis had/has the potential to be Great Depression II, and most national outlets were throwing all their resources toward it.

Financial crisis last week? What financial crisis? Must have missed it while I was left out here in the dark for a week. Not being a smart ass. I seriously have no idea what crisis you're talking about.

As an investor in utilities -- phone bill, electric bill, gas bill, etc. -- I'm not sure, either.

liesl ... i realize you're not being a smart ass. that's actually what brian williams said on nightly this week. he said if it wasn't for wall street crumbling, that NBC would have been in Texas all week covering the aftermath.

We could have covered the other half too if Jonesy hadn't been playing daredevil with a laptop.

Yes, I am reviving this thread. In the middle of the presidential campaigns and the financial crisis of our country, I am bringing it up again. And here's why.

Finally, 21 days after the hurricane hit, we get a visit from an insurance adjuster. I realize these people are busy and have lots of claims, but since the beginning and every other day since, I have reminded my insurance company that we are dealing with water damage in a home. Water damage that began to smell over a week ago. Water damage that turns to mold. In a home with children. Twenty-one days later, they finally come to assess our damage. And here is what happens.

Hubby tells the guy that there is a soft spot in our roof from a branch. It fell flat on the roof and didn't puncture it, but there is broken rafter under there. He says (several times) you cannot walk on that part of the roof. There is a soft spot. He tells us that he can't pay us for damage that he can't see. He will pay to replace the roof (???) and if during that repair process, we discover a broken rafter (duh!) that we will have to file for a supplement to have it repaired. Then, get this, the guy walks on the roof! In the soft spot! And stepped through my freaking roof! The guy put a hole it in and tells us that he will be sure to include enough to cover that. Are you freaking kidding me???

Next item. The roof of the rent house (the one with water damage) will NOT be replaced. We are talking about the roof that was punctured in four places. They will cover replacing the sheetrock, repainting and replacing the padding and carpet. What about the mold, I ask. Again, they cannot cover damage they can't see. I pulled hubby off to the side and told him that if he didn't put his fist through the wall to show the guy the interior damage, I would.

Tree #1. This one fell on the fence in our backyard. Yes, they will pay us to repair the damaged portion of the fence.

Tree #2. This one fell on the warehouse and hubby's truck. They will not cover any damage that this tree caused. The auto insurance will have to cover the truck and the commercial insurance will have to cover the building. Maybe I don't understand these things as well as I thought, but my understanding was always that if a tree on a piece of covered property damages other property (such as your neighbor's) then the policy that contains the tree must cover the damage. I am told that is not the case. I shudder to think how the two different insurance companies for the warehouse and truck will fight over the fact that the same freaking tree damaged both items.

Tree #3. This is the largest tree I have yet to see uprooted by our dear friend Ike. The root bed of the tree alone is well over 20 feet in diameter. The height of the tree is estimated to be well over 125 feet, probably closer to 150 feet. And since it didn't actually damage anything, we get nothing. The sheer size of this thing prevents us from ever being able to clean it up ourselves. And yet we get nothing to help with the cost.

Have I mentioned that we have not received a single drop of rain since the day Ike passed over us three weeks ago?

I am not sure that I care any longer who gets elected in November. Or that the financial markets of this country are crumbling. Quite honestly, I think a majority of the people in this country get bogged down by the every day pressures of real life, just like I feel right now. And they no longer give a shit. Just something to think about over on the politics board.

As always, I say thank you to the SJ Nation for reading to my long-winded rant. Well, the handful of you that stayed to the end.

    Insurance pretty well sucks.

The thing re: the tree falling -- wherever the tree does the damage is whose insurance problem it is. The remnants of Ike blew a tree from a neighboring yard onto my mother's house. Her insurance had to pick up the bill.

And it sucks to hear about the big tree -- first, that you lost such a nice, old tree, and secondly, that nothing's covered re: its removal, though that's SOP for insurance. My advice is to find a neighbor or buddy with a chain saw and go to work. Then save the firewood for later.
