Yeah, UBC just played against my alma mater a lot when they were in Idaho, but they were in NAIA D-II and played against a few Idaho teams.
I just remember watching him destroy my alma mater. It was ridiculous at that level.

What I don't get is why sportscasters bitch and moan every year when teams NOT from boston, New York or LA go deep into the post season, saying

"well, Charlie, the casual fan isn't going to care about this series. The casual fan doesn't want to see a mid-market team, the casual fan doesn't know who Matt Holliday and Jeff Francis are.
Why do people care so much about the casual fan, anyway? I get it, ratings drives business, but I'm not making any money watching baseball. I don't give a shit about the business it does, and I'd venture to say neither do most baseball fans.

Would it kill sportscasters to, instead of yammering on about why people aren't going to watch, maybe, just maybe find angles to encourage the dumbass casual fan to check it out.
How about the fact their both up-and-coming teams playing some great baseball? And that's just an outsider looking at it. If someone talked to some of the guys I'm sure there's TONS of angles waiting to be told that people in Iowa or Nebraska would be interested in hearing about.
Maybe I'm bitter for not living in a major market, but I'm sure there's a good number of people who don't live in one who are watching the NLCS, or waiting for a reason to watch instead of being told why they shouldn't.

Ah sorry, had to be done.

I'll go back to bashing the Yankees, which I will admit is much, much, much more fun.

I'm a little surprised more hasn't been made out of Jeff Francis.

Playing NAIA D-II in Canada, no less, and making it to the big leagues this quick and then dominating in the postseason is pretty incredible. Hell, I've only been out of college five years so that means he hasn't been out much longer, if at all.

And sorry, that rant really wasn't related to what you guys were talking about. It's just been building up and needed to get it off my chest.

Not just the post-season. But it's amazing how well he's done as a pitcher in Denver of all places.

It's the metatextual passing for sounding informed or intelligent, and now that you've noticed it, you'll start noticing it all the time, in sports and politics and everything else.

    It is annoying.

Yeah, I think I've noticed it for a while but am now just realizing what it amounts to.

Obviously, you guys are unaware of the Curse of Don Mattingly that plagues the Yankees and will only get worse when he is named manager next week replacing Torre.

The Yankees reached the World Series in 1981. Mattingly made his Yankees debut in 1982 and they did not reach the World Series during his career.
Mattingly retired after the 1995 playoffs. The Yankees won the Wolrd Series four of the next 5 years and played in the Series again in 2001 and 2003... 6 WS appearances in 8 years.
Mattingly joined Joe Torre's coaching staff in 2004, the year the Yankees became the biggest post-season chokers in MLB history, blowing that 3-0 lead to the Red Sox in the ALCS.
They have been eliminated in the first round every year since.

    Do the math...
Don Mattingly's career: 1982 thru 1995, Yankees make no WS appearances.
Mattingly reitred, not affiliated with the team, 1996-2003... 6 WS appearances, 4 WS titles.
Mattingly as coach, 2004-07... no WS appearances, choke like dogs in 2004, gag in first round 3 straight years.

    Any questions?

And was hilarious to watch. Glad he did it, though -- we snuck the game in for the second edition with a few minutes to spare.
