We saw it today and I have a similar take on the movie. My daughter and I enjoyed it. My wife did not, but she mostly goes to these to spend time with us.

I do think Gunn has a habit of making characters dumber than they are in the comics for the sake of humor, but I liked what they did with Drax. I especially liked him using his head as much as his fighting skills at one point.

Griffin Newman from the Blank Check podcast has pointed out with sequels, the worst thing is if you come up with some contrived reason for everyone to start from square one. GotG as a series has each of the characters mature or change over the installments, part of why its excellent.

That can be a challenging thing with comic book movies because studios are afraid of a backlash from fans if the characters change too much. Comic book companies have the same problem. Marvel Comics came up with a ridiculous way to break up Spider-Man's marriage years ago, then after finally putting him back together with Mary Jane Watson, they found an even more ridiculous way to break them up again. Their inability to let the character grow up has made a shitshow of the story.

Just watched the latest Ant Man. Mid-tier, at best. Needed to be at least 20 minutes shorter.

I'm not sure if we are still avoiding spoilers for GotG 3, but Gunn has been posting a clarification of one character's fate on Twitter.

The High Evolutionary does not go down with his ship. He was carried off the ship and imprisoned on Knowhere.

    Did they show that?

Not all of it. Maybe not any of it, but that is what Gunn said happened and it is his story.

Just got home from watching GotG3. Glad I didn't take my 10 year old. Too much sad for a 10-yr-old. But great flick. He'll like it in a few years. LOL

My daughter and I saw Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse tonight. Yes, it is very much part of the MCU. It is also excellent, maybe better than the first one. They have a great feel for the soundtrack and the animation is different and cool. They managed to tell a complex story with an insane number of Easter Eggs and make it work.

At least half the theater didn't realize it was just part one of the story even though it was in the trailers. They were literally arguing with the screen, which was entertaining. Happily, it won't be five years between movies this time. The next one is out next March.

Edit: The Screen Crush YouTube channel does Easter Egg breakdowns. They list 301 for this movie.
