Disaster first two days for the zebras.

    And we've got a 10, 11 and 15 in the South round of 32.

Not bad. I finished the first round 25-7 with no major damage. I lost two Sweet 16 teams (Duke, Michigan) and one Elite 8 team (Missouri), but I don't think any of those will actually hurt me because most people lost those teams. If anything, I would guess I had those teams losing earlier than most of my competition.

It was a lane violation. Might be ticky-tacky, but it was the right call.

Fine, be that guy who makes that call. But blow the whistle if the guy MISSES the free throw in that situation. It had NO bearing on the free throw. NONE.

    Preventive officiating.

He misses the free throw, you blow it, absolutely. He makes it, there's no harm, and you go to the kid and tell him not to come in, that you'll blow it the next time it happens make or miss.

But 2.8 seconds left? In a situation where they could tie the game? Touchdown H. Jesus.

That was hilarious ... even if he was completely wrong.

No way. Why should officials change the way they call the game in the final seconds?

Every time South Florida wins Bruiser Flint kills another hobo.

Because they would do it the other 39:57.2.

It had NO BEARING on the free throw. If he misses the free throw, fine, blow it. It's close, I wouldn't call it, but fine, do it.

But he made the free throw. There was ZERO advantage gained.

I agree that zero advantage was gained in this one case, but if the rebound went long, you better believe he has an advantage. It's why the rule is in place.

I don't understand how an official is expected NOT to call a rule in the rulebook? Sometimes, we're too eager to criticize refs for doing their job.

Fine. IF the free throw goes long -- and it didn't -- then blow your whistle. Play is over. Goes the other way.

Know the situation. What's the advantage that was gained? None.

Letter of the law? Yes. I agree. But certainly not the spirit. And certainly not in that situation.

I will add this: If the ref(s) had told the kids during the game -- and they talk to them a lot -- about not coming in earlier, then my argument is moot, and I'll concede it.

But you're just inserting yourself into a situation with something like that on what most everyone -- fans, players, coaches -- will concede is ticky tack.

If you want the refs to call EVERYTHING under the auspice of "doing their job," for following the rulebook, these games would take five hours.

The idea that somehow we ignore the rules late in the game - especially rules where there is no wiggle room for interpretation - is ridiculous.

How about, stay behind the line until the ball hits the rim? How about don't grab a guys jersey.

And more importantly, how about, make an open 3-pointer and don't let a guy drive to the basket to score an easy lay-up with a 3-point lead.

As for the intentional foul, 100% correct, as the replay clearly showed. You cannot grab somebody's jersey from behind and pull on it as your opponent tries to get open.

For as smart as ND's athletes are purported to be, two pretty stupid plays in the final 2.8 seconds.

As for the lane violation, it's a violation. You call it, same as if someone else had stepped into the lane early. Doesn't matter if he makes the shot or not. Clearcut violation, easy and correct call.

And please, don't say "let the players decide the game" and ask the ref to not officiate the final five seconds. A PLAYER committed the free-throw violation. A PLAYER committed the intentional foul. The players did decide the game.

Can't believe I'm agreeing with the Zag. :)
