I've spent the last 20 years of my life deep in the heart of SEC country. Until about five years ago, I had NEVER heard anyone even suggest that South Carolina should be called "USC," and that was when some of the school media guides and releases started using it. I still haven't heard it used as a nickname with the population at large, and rarely see it outside of TV graphics or headlines that need to be shortened.
Maybe they've called themselves that for years, but from the outside it feels totally manufactured.
