Or "Calipari," from what I understand.

They were saying on sports radio this afternoon that ESPN is pretty much working on trying to dump him right now. Not because of this, but because - shock of shocks - he's a holy terror to the people he works with.

Bob was the football coach at IU? That explains a lot.

IIRC, Duke was in Maui early that season and his back would not allow him to continue to stay seated in the plane as needed. He tried to work through it.

Mickie Krzyzewski was tired of watching her husband suffer and urged him to take a break. He refused. She basically threatened to leave him if he persisted on trying to work through a back that was clearly messed up.

The fact that Duke didn't fare well under Pete Gaudet is really good fodder for those who detest Duke, which is most of the rest of the college basketball fan base. But if you take a look at this season's team, it won as many games as it did because Krzyzewski hid a lot of issues and squeezed out wins that few others could have fathomed ... enough so that Leonard Hamilton beat him out by only one vote in the ACC Coach of the Year ballots. It could be argued that Krzyzewski did more coaching and more work to deserve the award this season than in some other seasons where he did win it. That's not a knock on Hamilton at all - he richly deserved the award - but just saying that there's still a little coaching left in Mr. K. (which will, of course, continue to anger the anti-Duke sorts)

Back on topic ... there was no nervous breakdown. Back pain? Exhaustion? Refusal to slow down? Yes.

He's a great analyst, but evidently, that doesn't matter.

K's coaching during the second half of the 2010 season was absolutely vintage.

Being good at your job doesn't give you a free pass to treat the people around you like garbage, though. In any workplace.

He is a great analyst in that he knows basketball.

He is not a great analyst in that he still longs for the days when it was played with 18 screens and a set shot and it is never going to be that again.

The Ohio State team on which Knight won an NCAA title as a player averaged 85 ppg and 71 FG attempts per game.

Both figures would lead the nation this year by quite a wide margin.

Knight's powerhouse IU teams in the 70s averaged over 80 ppg.

Big Bobby's offense was more like 2 screens, two passes and an 8-foot jumper.

It all depends if the offense is better than the defense, and right now most nights the defense is better than the offense. You also have to have a coach willing to let their players play offense.

Heck, NCSt and Maryland played a 103-100 OT game in the ACC Final back in 1974. Granted, those two teams were freaking loaded with talent. Right now, offensive talent is lured away by the NBA. Often, it is lured away too soon.
