Cassell was already locked into a huge contract, so that made it a little tougher for the Patriots to trade him.

I thought New England used the franchise tag on him and then traded him.

That's exactly what the Pats did. Then KC gave Cassel the big contract. Cassel was a potential free agent, so New England had to franchise him in order to trade him.

That's the thing. Five years later and you still don't know exactly what you have with Vince Young. Was he a compete bust? No. Was he worth a top-3 pick? Maybe that year. Knowing what we do now, he's sure as hell not someone you want to tie your franchise's future to. Is he still a freak of nature? Yeah.

The problem with Young is that he's high maintenance. He's an amazing athlete, but he's not smart enough to put it all together on the NFL level. I think with the right amount of coddling and the right coach, he could be a good starter. I think Minnesota is the perfect fit for VY.

Newton will be destroyed in the NFL. Two things might help him:

    * A lengthy lockout that allows him to develop while teams are in limbo.

    * He ends up with a team that already has a good offense.

In any other scenario, he gets destroyed.

Newton definitely needs to go somewhere where they'll give him 1-2 years to develop a la Steve McNair. I think if he gets that and a good coach, I think he could do well.

I'm surprised so many mocks have him going to Washington. He doesn't strike me as a Shanahan quarterback.

They did, which committed them to a huge salary for that season. They would have had a huge chunk of their cap committed to quarterbacks, so dealing Cassel allowed the Patriots to sign some useful free agents.

I always thought the franchise tag was Belichick's way of thanking Cassel for 2008 and making sure the player got his.

Cassel was gonna get his regardless. The tag was just Belichick knowing he could get something for him instead of just letting him walk.

I thought his way of thanking him was dealing him to Pioli for what was rumored to be less than what another team was offering.

Union decertifies. Makes a work stoppage almost certain, right?
