Cecil Newton might have to panhandle to make up for what he didn't get from half the SEC.

I'm sure he can get a part-time job using all he learned in his classes at Auburn.

Dave Perkins of the Star does a nice column summing up the situation:

    http://www.thestar.com/sports/football/nfl/article/1029259--nfl-players-should-at-least-retain-their-fingers-in-any-deal?bn=1

They (the owners) negotiated with themselves, agreeed unanimously (except for Al Davis, as usual) that they liked what they had negotiated with themselves, then trusted compliant members of the media to broadcast a “settlement’’ deal had been reached and players would vote on it immediately.

I am thrilled that the players have spoiled the owners party.

And I'm still waiting for somebody from the players' side to tell me what is wrong with this deal.

I think a better summary than what Perkins wrote is to say that the sides got close and the owners decided to just take the last sticking points and shove them down the players' throats. It's not like the players didn't get anything they wanted, if reports on what the owners ratified are accurate.

The players don't want to recertify yet? Please. The decertification was a tactic, not something they were ever going to stick with. Does anybody doubt that?

As far as I can tell, the players don't really have a major problem with the actual deal. They just don't like the way the owners handled it.

For one, it's not a deal. The owners took a framework, made some changes, and then told the players they had an agreement.

The delay to recertify is just a game. I think the players will accept, because those needing a check aren't going to stop it on the basis of minor points.

It is a deal that has been offered. Y'all act like the owners just made it up rather than using what the sides had negotiated to that point. I'm sorry, but if that was true, the players wouldn't be ducking the question every single time they are asked what specifically bothers them about the deal on the table.

I look forward to the day this nonsense is over and we can go back to discussing the 53rd man on the Steelers' roster.
