I was surprised at how dumb Couch was. He definitely did himself no favors by picking Kentucky and the draft did him no favors when he was sent to Cleveland.

I'm not going to lie, I thought David Carr was going to be a superstar.

Hey fanboi, jury is still out on Smith, he's now got the biggest FA of the year, Mr. Harbaugh, "coaching 'em up" (as Mariucci says.) Okay, Smith does look horrible at times, but hopefully Harbaugh gets him back to doing the things he's most comfortable with, running, short quick passes. Smith really needs to improve hitting guys in stride though.

Alex Smith is entering his seventh year in the NFL. The jury has been out so long that they have declared a mistrial ...

Better than a verdict!! In the Bay Area, we always say, "remember Plunkett!!" Well, Smith's going to be our Plunkett (even Steve Young was rescued from the scrap heap in some respect, he was probably around 27 when he was finally installed as the starter (I was still a Montana guy then))

It's a bit unfair to put Willis and Revis in there given how far down they went in the draft, but the talent they passed on definitely makes the pick worse.

yes, absolutely... smith has been every bit the bust for the niners. with six seasons under his belt, the verdict has long been rendered: guilty of being a bust. the fact that he has another chance to have the verdict overturned is good for him, but no one expects him to take advantage. you take a qb first overall in a draft and he's going to fall in the 'bust' category when it's still a huge question mark whether he can ever be even a mediocre starting qb in the league.

my most recent 'shock' that he hasn't been all that goes to REGGIE BUSH, without question. i, along with most nfl personnel gurus, thought he was going to be an every-down, all-purpose threat... a rushing/receiving threat similar to marshall faulk (he's actually bigger than marshall). i'm stunned that he's proven to be more of a situational, third-down back and returner.... those do not become the guy most folks in the league thought for sure would be the no. 1 pick overall until the texans 'blundered.'

reggie's perfect for this 'not-a-bust-but-a-disappointment-nonetheless' category. i'm not at all embarrassed to say i was a believer.

Couch needed two full seasons as a back-up to learn an NFL system, in my opinion. Because he used a dumbed down playbook at UK and because the 1999-2001 Browns offensive lines were some of the worst assembled in league history, he had no shot. Couch began to look good during the Browns' one playoff season, but then he got hurt and all those hits seemed to wear on him -- and subsequently, like David Carr, he developed tap dancing skills in the pocket.

Chris Palmer's panic-button move to appease the fans and dump Ty Detmer, who was the designated tackling dummy for that 1999 season, doomed Couch.

Obviously, the Texans got that one right, but plenty of people were right there with you.

I wasn't. I never understood why people thought Bush would be an every-down back in the NFL. Hell, he never even did it in college.

yes, he was... maybe you're confusing him with joe mcknight.

but neither here nor there. i was wrong believing reggie could pick up where he left off at usc (other than the cut in salary)... i wasn't surprised that leinart was a flop, but bush? yeah. stunning to me.

Apparently, you forgot how big a role LenDale White played on that team. Easy mistake to make. Bush carried the ball only three more times than White in 2005, when they shared the tailback job.

I was of the belief at the time that LenDale White would be a better NFL back than Bush.

I didn't know he'd turn into the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man so quickly and rush for 3.5 yards per carry.
