I would say that 2 1st rounders, a 3rd rounder and Orton for a guy who I wouldn't put among the top 15 QBs and a 5th rounder is an excellent value. Even if you rank higher than that, there's no way IMO that the gap between Orton and Cutler is 2 first rounders.

Of course the Broncos screwed up those picks, but that's another story.

OK, I agree with most of your post. I do think Cutler is a top 15 QB, though.

Looking at it from the perspective of where the Broncos stand now, I wish that trade had never occurred.

geez louise, people.... requesting to interview someone doesn't mean he is a 'hot' hc candidate. regardless, i dunno what the argument is on this one. mcdaniels got the gig. most execs, from what i've been told, didn't have josh on their 'short' list. bowlen obviously did, and i wouldn't be shocked if several others did, too.

the skeptics were right to be skeptical. and josh's primary flaws -- youth/inexperience -- were largely responsible for his failure. he was not at all equipped to handle the load he insisted upon. josh likely learned from belichick that you want to have 'absolute power' as a head coach (your own gm). but kiddies are not ready for all that power. heck, belichick had the same immaturity problems his first go-round in cleveland. it ain't easy being the king. even harder to be the kid king.

The currently injured Steve Smith goes from the Giants to the Eagles:

I don't think McDaniels would have been hired if Bowlen hadn't hired him.

I don't think he would have been hired over Harbaugh in Baltimore or Smith in Atlanta.

He was the "Hotshot coordinator to watch" but a lot of people were stunned when Bowlen hired him to replace a coach who had won two Super Bowls and whose firing was not entirely popular.

PK was spot-on with that list linked above, BTW.

OH, and i meant to mention earlier that peter's list was his own of 'worthy' hc candidates... caldwell was first, fassel(!!) second... josh was sixth.

he wasn't listing who the 'hottest' names were. big difference. bowlen stunned us all by whacking shanahan and sought the young coach he thought had the credentials/potential to be 'shanahan, version II,' and turn cutler into his elway.

little did he know what the too-young, too-soon, power-crazed mcdaniels had up his sleeve. what a piece of work this mini-belicheat turned out to be. but don't play revisionist to this history: there was no feeding frenzy over young joshua at the time.

I like Orton as well. He is probably better than 10-12 of the guys who will be trotted out there on Sept. 11th to start.

And how about this... Orton would be the third-best quarterback to start for the Steelers in the last 40 years if he started opening day for Pittsburgh.

John Kasay's goodbye letter to Panther fans...

    Dear Panther fans,

I wanted to personally write this letter to every Carolina Panther fan. Words cannot express how truly thankful my family and I are for the most wonderful 16 years of our lives.

We came to the Panthers as a young family with a 3-month-old baby. We leave with 4 children, 2 of whom are in high school. In between, you have loved and cheered and blessed us way more than we ever deserved. The only thing I could offer in return was the promise that I would try my best, every day, to make you proud.

Thank you for your encouragement when I failed. Thank you for the celebrations when we won. And most of all, thank you for letting me leave with a treasure trove of memories that time cannot erase.

It is my hope that the greatest years in Panthers history are still to come. A franchise decorated with numerous Lombardi Trophies. Dozens of Hall of Fame players. And a region that swells with pride whenever they speak of their beloved Panthers.

It has been a tremendous privilege to live in Charlotte, to play for the Carolina Panthers, and to be able to share my lifelong dream of playing in the NFL with all of you.

I pray that this will be a wonderful season and we will all get to watch the Panthers return to their rightful place as one of the most feared teams in the NFL.

May God bless you. Thank you again for the memories.

    Blessings,

    John Kasay

That's a great letter, but "rightful place?"

I thought Jacksonville had more right than the Panthers.

In what possible world is Orton better than Romo? I'd also take Kolb and Hasselback over Orton.
