"I had a drink in my left hand," Burress said. "I'm just walking up the stairs. And, you know, it was dark. And I kind of, you know, missed a step. That's when I felt my gun ... started to slide. I went to grab it ... to stop it from falling. POW!"...
In July 2009, Burress asked the grand jury for sympathy, but it indicted him anyway. Asked why he believes he failed to convince the grand jury, Burress said, "My name is Plaxico Burress and my life hasn't always been squeaky clean."Burress seemed to contradict himself when he added, "Half of those people had no idea who I was. ... They just saw an African-American over there, sitting around, making a lot of money, carried a gun into a club and shot himself."

moron shoots himself, moron plays the race card
Moron asked interviewer Bryant Gumbel. "I said, 'Who's Mayor Bloomberg?' Dead serious."

Interrupt my Rogers Cup coverage to wade in on the Elway debate. Okay, you can argue he's the second-best quarterback of the last 30 years. No problem, I'll hang up and listen.

But to say Brady "isn't clutch?" Please. His late drives to win Super Bowls 36 and 39 are the very definition of clutch.

Didn't say he wasn't clutch. Said he wasn't as clutch as Elway or Montana. Brady has been clutch, but leading game-winning FG drives is not the definition of clutch. If you look in the dictionary, I believe it will say, see "Drive, The" and "XXIII, Super Bowl."

Let's put down the Elway Kool Aid for a second...

Elway led the Broncos to three Super Bowls. In those three games he lost 20-39, 10-42 and 10-55, all against different teams. That's a combined score of 40-136.

How did he play in thise three games?

    22-37 304 1-1
    14-38 257 1-3 (passer rating 36)
    10-26 108 0-2 (passer rater 19)

    totals
    46-101 659 2 TDs 6 INTS
15-33 220 .6 TDs 2 INS as an average outing.

So he was taking teams there, but the magic seemed to fall very flat once he saw the team from the NFC. Wasn't he at one point with Fran Tarkenton as the only QB to ever lose three Super Bowls?

Elway, great QB, but became an all-timer when he won the Super Bowl twice.

You put Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or almost any other QB in history on those Broncos teams, they'd be lucky to make the playoffs. And while losing multiple SBs sucks, you have to be really damn good to get in such a position so many times (TWSS). You do realize Fran Tarkenton is a Hall of Famer, right?

ygbfkm has it right. brady and manning are obviously great, great players. first ballot hof'ers. but what brady lacks that montana and elway DO have -- as do several others not close to them overall, like even eli manning -- are those game-winning TOUCHDOWN drives to put the exclamation point on their 'clutchness.' if adam vinatieri is scott norwide, perhaps we're thinking of brady as we do jim kelly.

don't get me wrong, moving your team into fg range for a last-drive, winning score is sweet. but you're still putting your legacy on the shoulders of a kicker. montana has the supe vs. the bengals as his signature 'clutch' moment; elway has 'the drive.'

what are brady's signature moments? moving into fg range? like i said, it got the job done, and thanks to adam, that's all that matters. except most of us think of it being adam who was the most clutch patriot in those games, not brady.

oh, baby, are you barking up the wrong tree here. those denver teams were so overmatched vs. those nfc defenses it wasn't even fair. denver didn't go into ANY of those games with anybody giving 'em much of a chance. you want to bark at kelly for not beating the giants in buffalo's first supe, fine. but they, too, were completely overmatched in their supes after that.

    Re: Running NFL Offseason Thread

And I said he was wildly popular before he started winning Super Bowls, and if we can remember back to when it looked like Big John was going to be another Tarkington, there was a time when Elway was not considered a greatest of the great.

Does anyone know how many times Elway threw for more than 20 TDs in his first 10 years in the league? One. Uno.

It was what he did in his last six or seven years that placed in the top 10 or five QBs of all time. Fucking guy threw 142 TDs at 33 age or older. He threw 158 in his first 10 years in the league.

Carson Palmer right now is 31. McNabb is 34. Peyton Manning is 34.

Imagine any of these guys, Manning included, throwing 140 or so more TDs in their career.

So, yes, in my eyes, Elway had two very distinct periods in his career.

It's TARKENTON. Seriously, if you want anyone to take you seriously (although that horse is probably miles from the barn by now), it would help if you spelled the names of well-known players correctly.

What Elway did in leading those three teams to the Super Bowl was more impressive than anything he did afterward. There's a reason he was wildly popular before he started making fantasy owners happy. People who understand football knew all along what they were watching. And they reacted accordingly.
