Remember when primary sponsorship on a Cup car went from $1 to $3 mil? Early 90s.

That was a huge jump at the time, a 'holy shit' thing.

I know we're off topic, but I really don't see how semi-partnerships really help a brand. Petty? STP. Earnhardt? Goodwrench. Gordon? Dupont. I still think of Kenseth when I think of Dewalt. Edwards and Subway. Jimmie Johnson and Lowe's. Home Depot and Stewart. I even have a problem when corporations switch out different brands on cars.

Think about it though, by the end of their careers, Gordon was no longer Dupont, and Johnson was no longer Lowe's. Junior regularly had a rotation of sponsors. If those three drivers in Hendrick cars couldn't command a single, recognizable sponsor, not many people can.

I got 34 out of 35. The only one I didn't get was the last, which was listed as 2012-present... which coincides with my getting out of newspapers and quitting regular race viewing.

My how times have changed. Three decades ago, if the wrong person overheard you as much as telling a racial joke, your butt was in a sling.

With all the rote comments and tropes these guys spew, it is like they have a Matrix-jack in the back of their heads connected to Fox News and Q message boards. No original thoughts.

Which kind of leads to diminishing returns for sponsors, devaluing such sponsorships while costs continue to escalate. Viewers aren't watching as much, buying as many tickets - where does NASCAR find that loot to cover that gap?
