Did not realize it was actually Punjabi. I have seen people treat Asians with Western or at least Western-sounding names like they're trying to pull something.

The best response to that sort of thing was from an Asian-American nurse who was in to pick up some paperwork shortly before going on maternity leave. One of the psychs asked her if she knew the sex and what they were going to name the baby. She told him they really liked Jennifer. He insisted on knowing her "real name" meaning the "oriental name." She leaned in conspiratorially and said "Gamera!" Then she told him her Asian name was "Mothra." He didn't catch on until her phone rang and she excused herself so she could speak to her husband, "Godzilla."

 

How many times do you think I've heard "no really, where are you FROM?"
