according to the Brookings Institute, a liberal think tank African Americans comprise 12% of the middle class, and are 13% of the population.

To deny race as a factor is to deny reality. to say race is the defining factor is also to deny reality.

At the risk of sounding unkind, I admire what the hotel is doing, but if I booked a room to get some time away to decompress, my first choice wouldn't be a staging site for refugee relocation. I've backed out of staying at places with rooms full of middle and high schoolers and I love kids dearly, but it doesn't mean I want them running wild while I'm trying to rest. #GrumpyOldLady

The worst is staying in a hotel that’s also hosting many teenage swimmers.

Starting in 2025-26, California schools have to offer Ethnic Studies in high school. It will be a grad requirement starting in the 29-30 school year. The BS excuses for why we can’t do this are coming fast and furious. I say TS.

Did they propose a curriculum or a detailed definition of ethnic studies? Can the student chose which ethnicity they’d like to study?
I’d prefer high schools to concentrate on biology, chemistry, trig, physics, proficiency in a second language, critical reading and writing skills. And a balanced view of world history and American history.

yes there is curriculum and everything you want to focus on are still grad requirements. This will likely eliminate an elective or eliminate students from having a free period their senior years. It will focus on Black, Latino, AAPI and Native American history, culture and literature. There are also units on Jewish studies, Middle Eastern studies and others.

It’s fine. More education is always better. I’m sure there will be a debate about how honest the history is.

I have no philosophical opposition to an ethnic studies class at all.

But damn, man, the number of grad requirements has gotten absolutely stupid over the years. My youngest is a high school junior. He is on year three of math he will never, ever use, with year four to come. Between the requirements for math, English, history, science and a foreign language he's going to get through high school without ever taking a class specifically because he was interested in the topic and wanted to learn more. I'd be perfectly happy with something like this if they were pairing it with a lessening of the math requirement, for example, but that won't happen.

I've grown really tired of schools as the battle ground for political tribalism, even if this move is solidly from my side of the political spectrum.
