I've been thinking about this a lot the past couple days, too, and would be interested to know the recruiting practices of police departments. I know nothing about them, and wonder:

What are the breakdowns of demographics, racially and economically speaking? And in minority areas, in particular, what is the predominance (or not) of white cops?

Is there active recruiting of minorities, and how successful are those efforts?

Are there active programs -- say, explorer- or internship-type things -- that are truly live and successful examples, and geared to reaching out to younger black people (teens and college-age) and attempting to interest them in and recruit them to police work?

Are there opportunities within black communities, that police departments take advantage of, to engage with those in the neighborhoods in ways other than active calls to crime or domestic-violence scenes?

You don't think I do? It's not hard to intellectually grasp the breadth and depth of the critique. The NYT's project argues it goes back 400 years and persists now in different, even subtle, unconscious forms.

I'm trying (and failing) to find where this was taken. I'll update if I can.

I don't want Socratic Alma right now. The preferred response is to answer the question, not ask another. Are you saying the NYT is the arbiter of what systemic racism means?

I don’t care what you want. You’re not the judge of anything or anyone. You barely share a thought of your own. I don’t have to write a paragraph to your satisfaction.

"I know what you all think systemic racism is."

    "OK, what is it?"

"If you don't know I'm not going to tell you."

    Fucking brilliant.
