No, but our institutions certainly are. They're our force multiplier.

And let's be honest, everyone is a little racist. It takes an act of real self-awareness to admit it and go to work changing it.

I'm being honest. ... I don't think everyone is a little racist (or a lot).

    If only that were so.

The world over, there's race bias of all kinds built into all populations. Big or small, a lot or a little.

It requires a level of individual self-awareness to identify and challenge them.

You just shifted from a statement about how everyone (individual people) is a little racist. ... to racism being built into all populations (groups of people).

Of course, as long as there is even just one person with racist attitudes out there (and those people will always exist), sure, racism is buit into all populations. That doesn't mean that everyone is a little racist.

Keep it at the level of the individual then.

Everyone everywhere is at least a little racist.

    Not in my experience.

But I do like looking at people individually. I think it is the closest thing to an antidote to racism as there is, because racist behavior usually stems from broad brush assumptions and beliefs that are used to try to reduce groups of people into a trope.

When you somehow get someone to approach people as individuals, you make it more difficult for them to think that way. It's like that scene in Do the Right Thing:

Of course. But even in the movie, the state preceding that understanding is bias. Race bias. Black. White. Korean.

In part because none of us can see what's in someone else's heart or sub- or unconscious mind.

Racism in America is the default setting. It's background radiation.

If there was some critical mass of non-racist people in America for example, our institutions might not be so monolithically racist.

So I know where you are coming from. ... can you give me an example of one of America's racist institutions?

You think our government discriminates against people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial group?

Much of it was created to do so.
