The way it should be, at least for Boise. Of the top teams, Alabama and Ohio State beat cupcakes. Boise beat another ranked team. Thus, Boise is the most impressive of those teams thus far.

What did the Tangerine Bowl or the Astro Bluebonnet Bowl mean in the 1970s? Was there something to play for? Did the games mean anything? Why did people watch/attend then (did they?) and not now?

If the other bowls are dying, it's because of bowl overkill. Bowl used to be a reward. Now it's a .500 season. It used to be a few cute events to watch on TV. Never more than 1 a day (until New Year's Day). Now it starts at 1 p.m. and goes till midnight every day for more than a week.

It meant Lindsay Nelson and that sports coat on New Year's Eve, pal...

I caught some of the "new" bowl names this year on ESPNs bowl prediction chart. Oh my.

Ok, so this weekend when Alabama plays Penn State and Ohio State plays Miami, it should flop again, eh?

Absolutely correct. Used to be going to a bowl at least meant something: that you were a top 20 or top 30 team. Now we have teams that are 6-6 going to bowls and some bowls struggling to find a team.

Mark my words, if this continues, one year we will have a scenario where some minor bowl cannot find a team with the required 6 wins and has to go beg the NCAA for some exception (maybe counting a win against an FCS team, or even taking an FCS team that lost in the playoffs, etc.)

I think you can already count one FCS win.

I heard Kirk Herbstreit on the radio the other day say that the Big 12's best non-conference win last year was when Oklahoma State beat Stanford in the Sun Bowl. Yikes.

Sure. Is that such a problem?

The Astro Bluebonnet Bowl meant Howard David, The Mizlou Network and the HS All-American team at halftime.

The Bluebonnet Bowl is what you watched while getting dressed to go out on New Year's Eve. Just like the Sun Bowl was what you watched to hear Pat Summerall and Tom Brookshier talk about getting wasted in Juarez the night before the game.
