MSNBC just showed an add promoting this Saturday's ND-Purdue game on NBC. It was promoting the new coach's first game.

    Oops.

Made me think I had accidently started playing something on my DVR.

Hearing rumors that Butch Davis could step down tomorrow due to Carolina's NCAA troubles. Not sure how credible...anyone around here have any inside scoop?

If Cam Newton ran any faster, he'd have a laptop in his hands.

And ... USC -- no, the other one -- gets notification of NCAA inquiry.

UNC should form a special committee lead by Dean Smith to work with NCAA on investigation.

Does this story change anything? If true, it does take quite a bit of the luster off the "anyone, anyplace, anytime" motto and Boise's complaints about none of the big boys willing to play them. If Nebraska was offering a home-and-home, and Boise still said, "We want a $1M guarantee to play in Lincoln", then they need to decide what they are going to be.

Are they going to be the "Little Boise State" that is like a MAC team that needs to cash in to play a strong program? Or are they going to be the "We Can Play With Anyone Boise State" that deserves BCS bids every year and bemoans the "fact" that no one will play them?

Methinks we've seen the last of Dean Smith in a capacity like this due to his dementia issues. Though I have no love for the Heels, I'm still saddened.

I love how the column that talks about Nebraska walking away from talks with Boise State ends with, "Like Pelini said, the Huskers don’t duck anyone."

San Jose State got $1 million from Alabama from last week's game. Why shouldn't Boise ask to get paid the same price as someone in their own conference to play a BCS Top 25 team when it's a better program? Especially when they talked about setting up a series three ways -- two-for-one, home-and-home, one-way trip to Lincoln.

Why should Boise State take only half what other WAC schools make non-conference?

Another reason Boise State might not take less from BCS powers for marquee non-conference games? Because of the BCS, of course. Payouts from last year's BCS by conference ...

    http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/64647

    Big Six conferences
    SEC -- $22.2 million
    Big Ten -- $22.2 million
    ACC -- $17.7 million
    Big East -- $17.7 million
    Big 12 -- $17.7 million
    Pac-10 -- $17.7 million
    Total -- $115.2 million

    Non-Big Six conferences
    Mountain West -- $9.8 million
    Western Athletic -- $7.8 million
    Conference USA -- $2.8 million
    Mid-American -- $2.1 million
    Sun Belt -- $1.5 million
    Total -- $24 million

    Other recipients
    FCS conferences -- $1.8 million
    Notre Dame -- $1.3 million
    Army -- $100,000
    Navy -- $100,000

In other words, Boise State, for all its success, made nearly $500,000 less than a mediocre Notre Dame last season from the BCS. And about $600,000 less than Nebraska.

    Doesn't seem right, does it?

I admit I don't know everything about how guarantees work ... but in the case of a seven-figure or high six-figure guarantee, isn't that generally only done in the one-for-none contracts? Like when Auburn or Alabama or Florida pays an FCS team or a low-level FBS team a bundle to come in for a one-time beating? I thought that was the payoff for Alabama not returning the trip to San Jose State, for example.

The story doesn't make it crystal-clear, but I read it to mean that Nebraska offered to play a one-for-one and make the return trip to Boise, but Boise said it still wants a $1 million guarantee to come to Lincoln.
