Pretty much all the districts within 15 miles just announced closure tomorrow, but that was before the reported demise of the suspect at about 1150 pm

PC in progress with the interim president of MSU, saying patently idiotic stuff such as, "no one could have imagined that the unimaginable has happened," (imagine that) and "we cannot let this ever happen again" (oh really? What exactly are you gonna do to stop it?) and lots of touchy-feely T&P stuff, "we put our arms around the families," etc etc blah blah.

The suspect is described as a 43 year old male with "no known direct connection" with MSU.

Izzo's gonna say something well-meaning but dumb this week. I can just feel it in my bones.

Yep. From all appearances, the shooter had nothing -- whatsoever -- to do with sports. So keep it that way.

Of course it'll be an issue that the scheduled home basketball game against Minnesota on Wednesday night is canceled due to the 48-hour campus shutdown. I suspect rescheduling or relocating the game would be tough this late in the season. There aren't many open dates left for anybody.

Izzo should just say, "we'll play when the safety authorities say we should play," and leave it right at that. Not one word about losing a home game, how it'll affect seeding for the tournament, none of that. If it means you have to play three games in five days at some point, and your team will be "tired," tough shit.

Thought the same thing. No idea how he’s evolved into the official mascot of MSU. I remember watching Mel Tucker’s introductory press conference and wondering why Izzo was doing a tight five.

It's worth noting that when I say what I did I don't mean it in an entirely pejorative way. After the Nassar scandal, Izzo was kind of the one remaining untainted authority figure (yelling at kids on the sideline notwithstanding) left at MSU. Because a lot of that identity is tied up in his wholesome U.P. background, which he refers to a lot, my fear is he's gonna drop some reference to how we never had to worry about school shootings in Iron Mountain or something like that. Sometimes, that appeal to nostalgia works, but in this case he'd be referring to a past very different to that experienced by nearly every MSU student.

NY Times is taking some heat over linking the two events. I'll just say it's not a real good look.
