“What went wrong” is pretty simple. We as a society determined that it was OK for ordinary civilians to own armaments of war.

Exactly. The only surprising thing is it doesn't happen every day.

The kids who survived that shooting are old enough to have kids in high school.

Typically, at that age, especially when one has kids in high school. one is quite conservative. I guess it’s because in that situation you realize life isn’t one big party. Things have to be a certain way and someone has to pay the bills.

Have any of the survivors become very pro-gun?

Three people were shot - one died, the other two in critical condition - at a house across the street from my kids' elementary school last night. Police had the mobile command unit and forensics van parked directly in front of the window to my first grader's classroom all day today. It happened overnight so there was no threat to the school, but man I did not enjoy having to have that conversation with my kid this afternoon. They kept the children inside all day. I'm not sure what good that did, except the privacy sheets for the body were still up at around 9 a.m. when I drove by.

But seriously, how fucked up is it that I live in a country where I have to try to reassure my 7 year old that he's not going to get shot? Or that as a society the only thing we seem remotely interested in doing to address it is to make guns even easier to get access to?
