Correct. When you somehow succeed in disgracing the surname more than Jim Rome already has, well ... this happens.

Was this done by the new regime? The only executive name I saw in a story was Mike Murphy's.

    Someone said Shanahan was involved.

I'd risk a fine and a further ban to be out there if I were him.

If the series goes seven games, I would think that he's free and clear anyway as soon as the buzzer goes to officially end the fourth game of his suspension.

I read that Shanahan was consulted (as was Brian Burke), but Murphy made the final decision.

I wish the league would make up its damn mind about violent interference that causes injury. This suspension is equivalent to the Kostopolous one (only illegality on the play is interference, a little blindside but not enough to invoke rule 48, serious injury results), and in that context it makes sense. But in the context of Chara and Torre, just to name two, getting nothing for violent interference that caused serious injury, it's way too long.

Given how all over the map they've been on this, I was expecting 1-2 games. I'm not exactly displeased with four, but mostly I wish the league would come up with some sort of consistent punishment instead of pulling it out of their ass each time.

He would have to be in street clothes as he won't be allowed to dress for the game, but the street clothes guys usually get to come on the ice and hoist the Cup, so I think he would be fine.

I thought 2, I am fine with 4. Consistency is what has always plagued the NHL. 4 is quite a big number considering that those 4 games could be all played in the Final. As long as the next one is 4 or more then the NHL got it right, I think.

Well, since it's 57.1 percent of the series, maybe the next one (in the regular season) will be 47.

That would consist of having to committ murder, maybe mass murder.

I just don't trust them to treat the next one the same, especially if it's a star player injuring someone. They've been all over the map on this type of play just this season, never mind previous ones. And if players don't know whether it's going to be 0 or 4 games, they're going to continue to do it (particularly to take out top-line players on the other team) in the hopes that they'll get nothing.

Obviously. They're all over the place. But this was blatant and actually, since he got tossed early in the game, it's closer to a five-game ban.

I think so too. But just to get the full effect, he should at least have his sweater and skates on. :)
