The Pittsburgh Pirates got outscored 38-3 in Games 2, 3 and 6 of the 1960 World Series.

Guess who won the 1960 World Series?

Funny thing about the Stanley Cup, just like the World Series. They go to the first team to win four games in the championship round, regardless of which team scores the most goals or the most runs or is deemed to be "the best" in the minds of certain fans.

Last time I looked, Boston doesn't have any more wins this spring than does Vancouver, and vice versa. See you Wednesday. :)

I JUST heard Tony Kornheiser compare these Finals to that World Series. He called it "schizophrenic"

Definitely can see the Canucks winning a low scoring, one goal game. if so, the only question is who is Vancouver's Mazeroski?

Cathal Kelly, in response to the question "Who deserves to win The Cup" replies, "Neither"

    http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/article/1008641--kelly-which-team-deserves-the-stanley-cup-neither

About the Canucks whining and diving, he goes on to say:

"By running his mouth before Game 6 — not by questioning Tim Thomas’s netminding style, but by later justifying that questioning by moaning that Thomas never says nice things about him — he proved how important translators are in modern sport. Sometimes things said in Nitwit sound very different in English.|"

    Love the last sentence.

True. Though if the Canucks win tomorrow night, even if it takes an overtime goal that bounces off of three players before going through Tim Thomas' five-hole, the championship will count just as much as it would had they swept the Bruins.

And as great as the Bruins have been offensively at home in this series, they've been equally inept offensively during the games in Vancouver. Luongo played like shit in Games 3, 4 and 6 in Boston but was great in Game 5 and good in Games 1 & 2.

Long threads on Facebook from my Vancouver siblings about how clear it was that the officiating was biased since there wasn't a call on the Raymond hit. In their opinion since Rome was punished for the severity of the injury it's a travesty that this wasn't even reviewed.

Maybe I'm missing something, but that looked to me like a guy who fell awkwardly when two players got tangled up.

Sorry, Vancouver fans, just had to post a photo from 17 years ago tonight when the Canucks came up a goal short in another Game 7 against my Blueshirts ... memories. Ah.

One Cup in 71 years, and four since 1926. Congratulations. You have the exact same success rate as the Blackhawks. :D

Not sure what point Kelly is trying to make here:

No, if the Vancouver Canucks win the Stanley Cup, they will be the least deserving champions in NHL history.

They’ll be the least deserving champions in all of sports history since the 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates, who were outscored 55-27 by the New York Yankees and still managed to swipe the World Series in their final at-bat. Vancouver fans, look at what’s happened to the Pirates since and tremble. That’s karma collecting on her debts.

The Pirates had six first-place finishes and won two more World Series over the ensuing 19 years. They didn't go in the shitter for good until 1993. It's not like they've been horrible since 1961. I guess you'd have to have some sense of baseball history and perspective.

And regarding his crack that the Canucks would be "the least deserving champions in NHL history," he needs to keep in mind that Vancouver had 54 wins and 117 points this season. They won the Presidents Trophy by 10 points. Least deserving champs? Try the 1938 Chicago Blackhawks, who were 11 games under .500 during the regular season.

Actually, I don't know that you can call any championship team "least deserving." If they do what's required of them, like win the required number of games, they're the champs. It'll be true of Boston just as it'll be true of Vancouver.

I know Cathal Kelly has a background in soccer writing, but he needs to realize that hockey playoffs aren't decided by total goals.

I can't see Luongo playing out of his mind again. Think Boston will get an early softie and he will melt down and get pulled rather quickly. I would hate a double-overtime game...do not think my heart could take it. As good as Thomas has been, the thought of him in the net in sudden-death scares the hell out of me.
