And those of us who like the show apparently are just deluding ourselves. Don't forget that part.

You took the words right out of my mouth.

(Seriously, though, it's not that I don't like the show. It's that I don't like certain heavy-handed MOMENTS in the show. Though, in fairness, I probably won't miss it when it's gone.)

I agree that Weber is one of the best things about the show... Sorkin is just incredibly arrogant to think that he could put together a cast this expensive and not face incredibly difficult odds...

He should have just trusted his own instincts and hired unknowns...

Look at the first season of The West Wing and keep in mind that at the time, Rob Lowe was essentially the star of the show and Martin Sheen just popped in now and then...

Rob Lowe - Formerly a big star who was pretty much washed up..
Bradley Whitford - Known best as the bad guy in Billy Madison...
Allison Janney - Known best as the Stepford Wife in American Beauty...
Moira Kelly - Girl from Cutting Edge...

I'm also guessing that pretty much no one had heard of Felicity Huffman or Peter Krause before Sports Night...

I know they are the words from your mouth...it's pretty much what you have written over and over again.

Pardon me. Next time I'll break out the blue font just for you.

  5. Excellent post. Mizzou, and dead on. The most prominent actor in the SportsNight cast when it launched was Robert (Benson) Guillaume. TWW was put together like a good Broadway dramatic company. But, I quibble with you on Allison Janney. Her previous highlights were a) the woman who ran the wife-swapping ring in The Ice Storm, and b) the witness who Ben Stone knuckled into testifying against the Russian mob and who was later killed, prompting his resignation.
    "I'm clear as a bell."

The Ice Storm is one of my favorite movies, but it wasn't exactly mainstream... I mean, I watch tons and tons of movies and while I knew who Janney was before TWW, I doubt you could have called her well-known...

Regardless, she was an outstanding character actor who was perfect for the role...

Janney was also in The American President (apparently pre-nip and tuck). I find it interesting that two of the most talked about shows entering into a fall TV season (Studio 60 and Commander in Chief) both tanked despite some critical acclaim. I wonder which show is going to get the dreaded "show that can't lose" sobriquet this year?

  8. She was in Primary Colors -- as the ditzy literacy specialist that Stanton/Clinton boffs right at the beginning, but I don't remember her in TAP. I remember that Anna Devere Smith -- Nancy McNally -- played the press secretary, and the inexcusable Mr. Malina played Annette Bening's assistant. but no Janney.

    I stand corrected.

According to IMDB, Janney was in Private Parts. I've seen that movie about 20 times, but I don't remember her...

She was not in American President...
