This show lost to fucking What About Brian? Good god.

As if having to live in a world where Dancing With The (C-level) Stars is one of the most watched shows on the medium isn't bad enough . . . fucking What About Brian beats Studio 60?

I'm starting to feel about Studio 60 (a great show) what I do about Six Degrees (a bad one), which surely will not be with us much longer. If you can't hold what is one of the best lead-ins your network has (and Six Degrees has the best lead-in on TV, period), then there's not much reason to mess around with you in other time slots.

If these ratings continue, the only question will be if NBC has the patience and willingness to make Studio 60 the Homicide of this era.

    Jesus, fucking What About Brian?

  2. That's grim indeed, Joe.
How'd you like your old boss at the LA Trib, running a major corporation now? Mrs. Pynchon must have left him something in her will.

I've long thought she was underrated.

    On so many levels.

Actually, he was using the let-her-buy-the-groceries quote in the newsroom long before Parcells thought of it.

    Jesus, fucking What About Brian?

Before that show's season premiere, the TV writer at my rag wrote something like, "You probably didn't know the season premiere of What About Brian is tonight. Heck, you probably didn't know What About Brian is still on. Better yet, I'll bet you didn't know a show called What About Brian ever existed."

Whew. I'm a fan of both, but S60 has a loooong way to go to get into the same sentence with Homicide.

I meant in terms of sticking with a quality show despite subpar ratings. Sorry for the confusion.

I've posted this several times here: Homicide is the best TV drama of my generation, and it's not even close.

I wonder what the demographics and psychographics are for this show.

You could make the argument that a lower rated show that attracts more higher income, higher educated people may be better than a higher rated show that attracts more lower income, less educated viewers.

Last Monday the NYTimes had an article that said Studio 60 was the highest rated show among the affluent and educated. The Office was No. 2.
That night, Studio 60 had the bit about alpha consumers, how one of them was worth five normal consumers.
So it doesn't matter how many people are watching, but who they are. If they are the ones who have money and spend it, then the show will have a long run or until Sorkin has a meltdown.
Just as long as Studio 60 stays in the top 3 or five in alpha consumer market.

Agree completely. It rings true to me that Perry and Whitford's characters don't do much laughing, Perry in particular. The idea is that being funny is serious fucking work. These guys are under pressure to be funny and original every week, without fail. I wouldn't expect there to be a lot of laughs behind the scenes.

As for the sketches, yes, they could be funnier. But that's asking a lot. If the show within the show was truly hilarious, Studio 60 would rise to the level of brilliance. They'd have to name the Emmy after Sorkin. And NBC would probably spin the sketches off into a new series.

And I have to say, I wasn't high on Sarah Paulson at the beginning, but she's growing on me.

You can't just go on high-income demos, though.

High-income might also mean "tougher sell" because that demo is more intelligent... and probably older as well --> Not good.

M 18-34 is the most desirable demo... very easy sell. ... And I'll bet anything many, many M 18-34 were watching MNF last night. I can't wait to see what MNF did. Somebody post if you find out.

What About Brian is the perfect counterprogram for MNF... Very smart of ABC not to cannibalize its sister (brother?) ESPN. I'm sure What About Brian skews very, very female.
