Biggest shock so far is three seed Muguruza — a genuine threat to win the whole thing — getting blasted by Cornet in round 2.

And Coco Gauff not only bowed out of singles in her first match, she was also a round 1 casualty in doubles, where she and Caty McNally were expected to make a long run.

It's never a surprise when Muguruza loses early ... or wins the whole thing.

Maybe, but to Alize Cornet, a 31-year-old never-was?

At the beginning of the ESPN show last night, Patrick McEnroe (I think) said he had talked to Darren Cahill about this match, and Cahill, who’s been working with Anisimova recently, was very confident she could beat Osaka. He said that caught his attention because Cahill usually downplays his players and their chances.

Which paragraph names the winner of Naomi Osaka's match? a 60th ranked player beat a 4 time Grand Slam winner in a Grand Slam event.
Shockingly, the Washington Post named her in the second paragraph but not again until the 7th paragraph.
Tennis isn't a sport, its a live action reality show.

Also want to mention the best match of the tournament so far. Berrettini got pushed to the limit and after more than four hours finally managed to escape from Alcaraz (apologies to Brad Gilbert).

Berrettini won the first set easily and held on to win a tiebreak in the second. That’s about when the ESPN show ended. I figured Berrettini would cruise from there and went to bed. Woke up a couple hours later and checked the score to find Alcaraz had pushed it to a fifth set. Berrettini toughened up and wound up winning the 10-point tiebreaker for the match.

Punting the overnight coverage to ESPN Plus has been helpful in maintaining good sleeping habits. I don’t get why they are sabotaging theirselves like this. Probably aren’t netting a dozen new streaming subscriptions.

It's OK if you put your hard-earned money on Sabalenka; just don't watch the match. Watch her try to serve for 15 minutes and you'll convince yourself there's no way she can back out of her driveway without knocking over the mailbox.

Not to mention the screaming, which would make Monica Seles blush.
