That doesn't happen and has never happened. If Nicklaus showed up and wanted to play next week (he wouldn't), the tournament would wave him in at warp speed. It's a business, you know. Besides, past champions get exemptions to enter almost every tournament (Steve Flesch, no legend, is in the Texas Open on one this week) and Woods is a past champion of almost every tournament.

Well, it's my post, and I can do whatever I want to with it, but I think if you read the story, you'll eventually come to the lines about some SEALs seemed conflicted/judgmental that Tiger, the world's best golfer, merely wanted to do part of the training, and not get hypothermia and crawl around in the sand. And there's part of me that thinks most of that suffering is existentially pointless anyway.

I read the story. I agree with your post as it pertains to the writing. I just found it fitting that you had to add the existential tangent.

Do you find exercise or training existentially pointless?

No, I do not. I find crawling around in sand and nearly getting hypothermia for the majority of the missions we have the SEALs do around the globe -- most of which I'd rather they didn't do - existentially pointless.

But, understand, I don't think most cops should carry guns. So I'm way over here on this stuff. I don't genuflect at the altar of volunteer cops and soldiers. I wish, in fact, far fewer people wanted to be them, so then we'd employ fewer, pay better and get in fewer dumb-ass conflicts.

But, in the context of the story, I found it striking that any SEAL member would be bugged by Tiger not doing all the training. I mean, I suppose I shouldn't find it striking, it being what they do and all, but nevertheless.

Wright and Bob talk Tiger. Wright's got a great little twang.

Reading about all the time he spent playing SEAL, I couldn't help but wonder if he dabbled in some of the supplements the door kickers use.

What Tiger used and did to his blood is the one absolute state secret that may not even exist but, if it does, seems unlikely to uncover.

Obviously every tournament would welcome Tiger. But I think there is a limit to how many tournaments you can enter by exemption every year.

Again, it's a pipe dream. But going to Q school, since he hasn't been in the top 125 since 2012 or 2013 or so, might actually give me a reason to respect him.

    You're being ridiculous.

Any player who wins 20 events gets a lifetime Tour exemption, a rule that was around long before Tiger. The majors have clearly written exemptions as well, and he is well within those limits until 2018 at the U.S. Open and for a long long time after that at the others.

The idea that he might take advantage of exemptions that have been around for decades is not that hard to understand. You don't have to look for reasons not to like the guy. There are plenty of reasons in plain sight.

How demoralizing would that be, to be a club pro or former college golfer showing up for a U.S. Open sectional and realizing you've got to beat Tiger Woods to get there?
